Does anyone have any bad experiences with these wheels? My first ride (usual route) on my brand new Trek ended after about half an hour when it threw me off! I could have gone into a rut, or hit something (but we couldn't find anything - and it happened so fast) but I'm wondering if the wheel just failed in some way?

Eh? Are you saying your wheel buckled/broke? Post not clear?

Sorry - my first ever post in a forum! Yes, the wheel is well buckled! I wrote the post and I've been trying to add a picture of the wheel - hopefully be on here shortly...

Properly pringled. Did you hit a rut or rock?

Hi,
Looks familiar! First ride on my Anthem X 29 with Hope wheels same thing happened! Very baggy wheel build! Claimed a new rim under warranty.Yeah, threw me off bike and didn't hit anything! I would contact Trek and explain situation.Make sure I tensioned all the spokes before my next ride!
Thanx
Max

I wasn't aware of hitting anything! Walked back up the track to see if there was anything I hit but didn't find anything. There were plenty of ruts (Ridgeway in Oxfordshire!) either side of the track I was on but I didn't get the usual 'wobble on' in that situation - I was literally riding along one minute and then over the handlebars and on my back the next...

Result! After they checked over the rim and saw what looked like a crack, the LBS have advised me that Trek will be replacing (and probably upgrading) both wheels under warranty! 😀

Bought a Trek/Gary Fisher x-caliber 5 weeks ago, which came stock with a Bontrager Mustang 29er wheelset. I have had rear spokes repeatedly get loose. Not a little loose, rattling around loose. I have been diligent about checking/retightening and keeping the wheel true. I have had it checked by the LBS a couple of times. Most recently a rear spoke was broken. I am new to MTB-ing (long time roadie) and am a cautiously aggressive rider, keeping to an intermediate flow trail. My experience with MTB-ing is limited, but this seems a design or quality issue with the wheel. I had a similar issue with Bontager road wheels in the past. I am 6'1" & 178 pounds, so I don't think rider weight should be an issue.

Yeah - most Trek mtb bikes have a max rider weight of 300lbs - so no issues there! Trek are pretty good with warranty claims, so it may be worth pursuing that. I got upgraded to Rhythm Comp's - bonus...

Did they warranty the tire for you? This exact thing happened to me today. 2nd ride on my new bike on an easy trail. Don't believe I hit anything. Tire looks exactly the same.....

Trek replaced both wheels for me. My LBS inspected the wheel and noticed it had failed where the valve comes through the rim...

🙄

Can we assume the tyre unbuckled itself as soon as it was fitted to a new, straight rim?

Ah - 29er wheels - they do that apparently!

Seriously though - either you hit something or the wheel is faulty.
