is there a specific reason why these are such a bawlllll ache to get on? is it because they are tubeless ready??
these arent even brand new, they are from last winter, went to stick one on today, and thought should be a breeze as they were run tubeless from new (via air compressor and that even took alot of faffing) for nearly 6 months...
would the things bead? would they buggery! i genuinely thought once you had a tyre bead (given it was on for 6 months and never once lost air) that a track pump should be enough to get it up the next time around 🙁
so gutted, put my advantage UST back on and it popped first time with very little effort at all 🙁
not gonna be able to get to a compressor so it looks like ill not be using them again 🙁
may just bite the bullet and get some UST medusa's
Never had a problem with mine, and they've been fitted and taken off a number of times.
Check all the usual things, kinks in the bead, punctures, residue causing a poor seal etc. Might just be you need to give them a good working over with your hands, pulling the bead up onto the outer rim bed, before you then jump on the track pump for joy.
IMO Bonty tyres are one of the easiest tyres to inflate tubeless, UST or not. And they don't even need much sealant to stay up either.
Assume you've removed the valve core? If so, try putting a tube in to get the bead seated, then remove the bead carefully on one side to take the tube out. Then at least you only have one side left to try and seat. Worked for me with a favourite old Michelin tyre that I was struggling to seat. Lots of soapy water on the remaining bead once you've removed the tube.
Mud Xs go on my 819s dead easy. Perhaps bonty has some quality control issues on different batches?
I had a mare with mudx on xt rims, wouldnt inflate with track pump, spesh storms however have been ace, very impressed.
Have always found Mud X easy to get up tubeless , the only time I had a problem it was resolved by taking the tyre off the rim and starting again , then it went straight up . Might be worth a try .
We often have trouble with Bontrager tyres seating properly, normally helped out with a brushing of soapy water and lots of pressure to get the last bit of the bead to pop into place.
Yep, a right bugger on Stan's arch rims. All other UST tyres go on with the rack pump (Maxxis, Panaracer, Kenda) but not MudX. However they go straight on with the LBS's compressor.
cheers for the replys- conflicting reports there, but glad to know im not alone!
i cant understand how after 6 months use then taking them and putting back on again it wont bead? surely the bead is stretched enough and fitted long enough for it to just pop back on?
how about the spesh storm controls, do they go on easy enough with a track pump??
heard good things about these, but if they are just as much faff with a track pump as the bonty mud x i may as well not bother...
i guess failing that ill be getting a maxxis medusa ust as the ust version pop on a breeze
I Reckon you're probably not getting the bead seated deep down in the "well" in the centre of the rim before trying to put the rest of that side on - seen it a few tyres before if its not properly in there.
The other thing I have done sometimes with non UST tyres is put another couple of wraps of tape round the rim just to make it tighter. Worth a try if you want persist with the tyre.
