Friend of mine wants some lightweight body armour that specifically gives protection to the rib/flank area, any STW knowledge/suggestions would be muchly appreciated.

I'm also interested in this ( lightweight being the main thing ) ..as I'm currently recovering from an injury to this area ..

TLD shock doctor , think it's called that
Can remove pads you don't want, light and not as bulky as others I've tried.

I broke a rib in a crash whilst wearing body armour that had a rib-protector. Just something to bear in mind.

Don't ribs fall under impact injuries i.e. even wearing body armour you can still get them if you smash into a rock hard enough?

Of course it lessons the risk, but you are never going to be 100% protected.

+1

Bottom two ribs at Antur while wearing my Alpinestars gear. I'd have been a lot worse off without it though.

Yep. The lower ribs will always be vulnerable i think. Imagine having the chest guard come any lower would potentially threaten internal organs in the case of a crash.

The only thing that will likely offer some actual protection will be crushable hard armour... eg the knox honeycomb chest protector insert or the level 2 Leatt chest protectors.

Lightweight stuff will lessen bruising.

If the link works! Light and doesn't impede riding. Stop bruising but not braking.

Riba aren't unique in that respect - you can break any bone despite protection
