[Closed] Boardman CX Team - upgrades?

BB7 brakes don't really work any better than BB5s, they're just easier to adjust.

aka_gilo has one and upgraded the saddle, cables (mainly for colour reasons, I reckon 😉 ) and wheels but otherwise I think has kept it standard.

I was impressed by the saddle too - close to a fizik.

I've also considered BB7 - shame the Road versions are so expensive. For ages I thought they were cheap, but I was looking at the MTB versions.

I swapped the stem and seatpost for second hand Thomson ones just because I think they add a touch of class (and because I wanted a shorter stem). They didn't save any weight though.

Mine didn't come with wheels, so I bought a Pacenti/Tesla set from Superstar. They seem good, but I wouldn't have done it if there had been original wheels.

So in short - no 🙂

I wondered about upgrading different parts but after a while thought better of it. It all works fine so why bother?

The only thing I've changed is the grip tape to some Lizard Skins 3.2 after the previous stuff wore thin and bought some gatorskins for road duties. Got a pair marathons from previous bike so that's most stuff covered.

I have taken mine back to the shop twice for the rear wheel, the cones keep on coming loose. taking it back this weekend, for a replace or fix properly ultimatum, then I'll be upgrading.

I changed the saddle to a fizik, simply because I like my fizik. That's it

I got one the other week, the only real weak link I can see is the bar tape as its a bit on the thin side. Might slap some Bonty gel stuff on there when it wears through

dont get lizard skin tape (tried it twice now, dont last long)

you'd save some weight with a kcnc post,bar & stem (expensive but ebay sometimes throws some up)

or some nice wheels

the only real weak link I can see is the bar tape as its a bit on the thin side

I took mine off as it was too thick! Nice thin Fizik microtex stuff on 🙂

Anyway, mine is heavily modifed:-

* Removed all Apex stuff and sold whilst still brand new
* Put all my 10spd 105 kit off a CX bike I was splitting
* 9spd Deore rear mech
* Fizik microtex tape
* Seat is a PX Superlight (I like them)
* bars are PX Strada compact
* seatpost is PX SL
* kept the cranks and BB but put other rings on

Now, for winter road training, the spec is:-

* SKS Chromoplastics
* Conti GP 4 season
* 38/50 chainrings
* 12-28 cassette
* Original 120mm stem

And for CX racing duties

* Remove the above road bits
* Hope Pro2/Crest wheels
* Ritchey CX tyres that came with it
* 42T single chainring (keep the mech on as a guide)
* 11-32 XT cassette
* 100mm FSA OS115 stem

Love it, great bike!

I changed the wheels to stans alpha340s, and the saddle to slr flow; saved a bit of weight and the hub makes a nice loud noise. And the tyres to 25c gatorskins too as I use it as a road bike.

I fitted Shimano CX75 brakes, mainly because I hated the silver of the BB5s and they were cheaper than BB7s.

I also changed the stem for a shorter FSA bargin and fitted Continental Cyclocross Speed tyres, sacrificing a bit of the offroad grip. Fitted a Selle Italia SL XC saddle and less lay back'd Ritchey post but didn't really need to.

Would like a Crest/A2Z wheelset but I really can't justify it unless I buy a 29er as well.

I love mine, though I find the SRAM gears quite clunky.

Changed to a Selle Italia Flite saddle, which is too hard, and I changed it as I found the Boardman original too hard. A Specialized will go on at some stage.

For me, it's the wheels. Going to keep the originals for commuting, but thinking of these http://road.cc/content/review/69946-kinesis-crosslight-cxdisc-wheels - as they seem a cheap way of saving some weight (300g says the review, £235 from Fatbirds), got a good review, and would mean I don't have to fanny around swapping tyres as much.

very heavy rims on those kinesis wheels

cp - is there anything out there that's lighter for a similar price? I had seen the Kinesis review and liked the sound of them, but any recommendations would be much appreciated.
