I know it's a shi++er etc. But came across this sprayed diamondback bmx bike on the roadside.

Rear hub is knacked. I was wondering if its worth cleaning up and having it as chav/pub bike/wrag around the yard bike.

Also, dumped was a Magna.. Though about taking the back wheel for the bmx.

Might paint the BMX in John Deere livery 😉

Defo looks shite thats for sure. I reckon it's been dumped by gypos. Check out the front brake on the Magna.

Could be a:

The Diamondback will be heavy but OK for a bit of fun. Magna back wheel wont fit without serious persuasion though as mtbs (even cheap ass ones) are 135mm rear spacing and BMXs are 110mm.

Well I picked it up and on closer inspection it isn't to bad 😉

So how do I pub bike it because I know nought about BMX's.

Is it wise to dispense with the front brake ?

And what is needed for that bottom bracket affair ?

Should I John Deere it or Aliss Chalmers it ?

OMG what a pup 🙁 Winter project probably.

Does it need a blog the project 😉

the diamond back probably has a cup and loose caged bearing bottom bracket. Very easy to fix. You can get new cups if required and bearing's ( in a cage ) for about £10 online or at a shop. Alternatively new bearings alone( in a cage )are a couple of quid from halfords. Just lossen bolts and hammer the ring with a screwdedriver to take apart. New cups ( if required ie split or worn) can be hammer out / in with a socket set extension / hammer and wooden drift. Halfords also do cheap taya chains for BMX's that'll fit yours. If the tyres have had it you can get cheap ok ones from JJB sports ( i got kenda's street tyres for my skip rebuild) or online should you have a local branch. Personally I'd keep the front brake on unless the back is really good (which i doubt)

Not topo sure how to fix the rear hub. May need a wheel?? From a tip?? As it a dimanond back you may be able to get new cones / freewheel etc.

If the giro ( brake system ) does not work I'd just take it off and a run normal cable. The weight of the bike will be a good thing to as you will get better at putting the power down on mtb.

Bear in mind that you ok beginer bmx's off ebay cheaply so I wouldn't spend much on it

Cheap Pub / Shopping bmx's are ace 9 unless you have to cycle miles 😀

Grabed the tubes from the Magna and had quick ride around the yard.

No brakes yet.

Hub seems OK and after a bit of tlc is working more smoothly, but a buckle in the wheel was causing the biggest problem.

Brilliant! recycling at it's best.

Get a cheap set of 3 piece cranks on it with a smaller chainring and a smaller freewheel and it'll be great for knocking about on. Keep the rear brake though.

Brakes! Reflectors and Grips
posted 6 minutes ago by R T

Today I sorted some sort of braking for the bike. The original front brake cable was seized solid. Removed the cable and bodged up a cable housing from off cuts and an old bmx brake cable lying around.

The front brake works and it's not to fierce, because upon inspecting the back it was found to be shot to pieces. I decided to remove the rear and now I'm on the look out for a regular back brake.

New grips added to cover exposed bar ends.

Reflectors removed from wheels.

Better saddle added.
