This thread is making itch. I might just get one.
For £200 I could get a low maintenance bike and it's only small.. and fun..

46 here & got a Mongoose Legion L100 in January... First time I've been on a little bike in 20 years & I'm loving it (bike was a bargain too: under £250 for full cro-mo frame, forks & bars, 3 piece cranks etc)... Any other old fools in Cumbria? I want to try the new indoor skate park in Barrow, but haven't had the guts to go by myself yet

I'm originally from Barrow, I'll bring my BMX up next time and we can be laughed at together if you fancy a riding partner.

Actually, I did once get a room full of "yeah" with a clicked 360 table into the Burnley Skatepark (RIP) foam pit.

8)

My repertoire consisted of a few grinds, 180 hops, bad tyre taps, the occasional fakie and a load of never-quite-pulled flatland moves.

Skillz! 😕

Man you lot sound awsumz, I'm hoping to roll down ramps, and maybe have a play in the bowl and possibly get out of it at some point.

I currently only have a nigh on fearless 4yr old to contend with though 😆

I spent most of my life riding BMX between 10 and 18 years old. Learning stuff takes a lot of falls, breaks etc,. which not many people are prepared to do (or put to the back o their mind when trying at least) when they are 40.

Last time I had a BMX I was about 45 and soon realised the time has gone but it was still fun for a while (could still do 180s and a few other things (things like tail whips didn't exist when I was a teenager!) but was too cautious to try much else.

All that BMX may well explain why I only ride single speed rigid MTBs with small (26") wheels...

I managed a room full of 'ooohs' and sharp intakes of breath when I hit the deck hard enough to destroy a full face lid. 😀

Personally I would get that WTP Versus from Winstanleys (if you must have new). The brake will work and the level of components are far superior. Also weight 16.2kg 😯 😯 😯

I have a little wince when i read 'i wanna bmx' threads on here. Then i read comments like ...

I managed a room full of 'ooohs' and sharp intakes of breath when I hit the deck hard enough to destroy a full face lid.

and feel justified with my wince.

I rode bmx for over two decades and loved it. In all those years i only wore a helmet when i raced. And in all that time of licking my personal envelope and 1,000's of crashes i never once hit my head. Luck? Probably but no one is that lucky for so long, there must have been a bit of skill in there somewhere. Then you have someone who is probably in their 40's, taking up bmx and wrecking a FF helmet? Seriously, you're doing it wrong all. You most likely weren't attempting a cash roll. More like mistiming a pump or little jump - really basic stuff...and you almost brained yourself? I hate to say this (but seeing the standard of riding on STW i'm considering this a PSA) - YOU ARE ALL TOO OLD TO TAKE UP BMXING! Yes you'll have fun and will maybe learn to 180 or something, but you'd be better spending that 'bike time' on your mtb. You can still have fun and practice the stunts but there's less chance of hurting yourselves.

edit: i think a little bit of my soul got deleted typing that 😥

Another +1 for the 40yr old BMX'er. I don't plan on doing any tricks but the skills you learn from pumping/jumping/being smooth carry over your MTB,and it's a HOOT!

It was at a track. My foot slipped off the pedal and I crossed up my steering. Bang.

I’m too old / not daft enough / not good enough to go to be doing tricks and the like in a skate park.

The thing is, right, is that if you fancy a BMX the sensible thing to do is buy one second hand (unless you can afford to buy one new on a whim that is). That way you're not going to take massive bath like if you bought a new £200+ bike and ended up selling it for £80 three weeks later. A decent second hand £100 BMX will always, pretty much, be a decent second hand £100 BMX.

edit- my newest BMX frame is 17 years old though- can't be doing with all this newly fangled small cog nonsense 😆

As you are well aware, you don't need to be doin' da stuntz to wreck yourself on a BMX, they are dangerous and deadly.

Euro, do you ever get invited to parties..more than once?

I'm not normally so sensible so if you want to dick about on a bmx, knock yourself out! Just don't come wheeling your wheelchair to me looking me to change your nappy and clean your feeding tubes 😀

BMX are whippy and lively not dangerous and deadly. If you're not crashing you're not training hard enough. My training has turned down a few notches in the last year

I'd rather loose control on a BMX than a MTB - Their alot easier to bail ..

True- lower to the ground, less stabby bits, not clipped in, more clearance and usually less obstacles to hit.

Don't know if anyone on here has Vitality health insurance (have it via work), but they have a thing where they give cashback for 50% of the value of a bike. Keep tempting myself with a Wethepeople one, pretty certain that in all the years since my teens, all skills I may have once had are now evaporated.

combined with not being as good as you thought you were.

I must move away from this thread at the threat of killing more middle aged mens dream of riding a kids bike.

I've been thinking about getting BMX but then thought or I could spend the money on a skillz course.

In teens I could do bunny hops which I knew as American (which seems to be the proper way of doing it according to skillz vidz) and English (flat take-off & flat landing). 180 bh, I think, could I? A cheats frame stand (not sure what it's really called) - front foot on stem shins leaning against bar of handlebars, rear foot on top tube shin leaning against saddle. Rollbacks to some degree. The old favourite of sitting on handlebars facing backwards and cycling. And of course, flicking stones at things with rear wheel.

Skillz course or BMX are indefinitely postponed for this early 40 something.

If it was a 2nd hand bargain buy I'd say go for it. I certainly wouldn't drop £235 on it. It's loads of cheap junk components strapped to a cro mo frame. It even looks like it's from a catalogue. But it's your choice.

Seriously look on Gumtree, eBay etc for a used fit, wtp, Sunday cro mo complete. There be bargains out there.

Don't go street riding and don't fit grind pegs. I'll retract my earlier statement about you all being too old (you are, but still...) Get a bmx and use it to learn how to crash and bail. That's a useful skill to take to the trails on the grown manchild's bike.

Kerley gets it. And the reason he gets it is that he knows how much 'work'* you need to put into bmxing to get anything from it. It's a bit like shark wrestling in that you can't do it half-hearted. You'll get bitten and submitted in no time, then swim off into the sunset with a couple of limbs missing wondering what just happened. When i was younger i'd have kicked the crap outta the toothy mammal, administering a couple of gil stabs in the process. Now? I wouldn't even consider apply the lard.

* It's the most fun but sore work you'll ever do.

I'll leave these here and you can put them where you think they should go... 😆 😯 😀 🙄 😉 8)

Skateboarding is a different kettle of fish, I used to ride ramps in my teens, I now struggle to stay upright on the flat on them. Remember to video it and enjoy!

BMX does take a lot of practice to master, I'll never be a jumping, tricks type rider as I race, very badly I'll add. Start of the season is best for me as a lot of my competitors seem to have a winter break, where my 7year old drags me out all the time so I'm not rusty. When the other guys get their groove on, I'm spat out the back, I have about a month of picking up some decentish results left...

Anyway today I'm trying DH for the first time... a&e updates to follow.

BMX is hard and unforgiving, yes, but it's also really good fun and a jolly good workout. Just standing up and pedalling the evil little f-cker uphill is a better workout than you'll get sitting and spinning up the same hill on a geared bike, most of the muscles being worked are the ones you'll be using to laugh at yourself while you do it 😆 With those tiny wheels, the trails don't come alive so much as they're re-animated-

[img] [/img]

Little 80s reference there for all you BMX kids 😀
