Once upon a time all you needed to know was whether you needed a front or a rear quick release. Not any more....

Need a new axle for the gravel bike as the one it came with is made of cheese and can now only be operated with a set of mole grips after the 6mm hex slot rounded out.

GF's Trance needs a new axle after she bent the lever in a crash.

Both axles are 12x142mm.... However the gravel bike requires a shaft length of 173mm and the Trance a 171mm.

Neither is X12 (assuming that is where there is a taper at the lever end).

Not found any site that includes the overall shaft lengths.

Can anyone point me towards a comprehensive site where I can buy with confidence?

Yours, a very stressed alpin

Cheers!

Download the guide (if your bike isn't already listed).

Buy from SJS Cycles etc....

Different thread pitches don't help either, once you know the pitch and thread length it's easier to work out. Sram maxle rear uses 1.75 pitch, giant uses 1.5, I think.

Yes, it does get worse! Try the bike manufacturer support first, they may not have stock but might point you in the right direction. Brand X, Hotlines/Chain Reaction/Wiggle have a reasonable selection with the option you can return if incorrect. There appear to be different ways of measuring, overall length, axle diameter, thread diameter, thread length and of course the pitch of the thread. Sometimes it may be etched onto the axle - Shimano!

You just need the length and the thread pitch. And 2mm on the length won't matter. See mtzoom - they have many of the main sizes/pitches.

Not as simple as that. Some have a different thread diameter compared to axle diameter. Overall axle length is an issue and also the width between dropouts. Try your local bike shop?

which ones? All are M12 as far as I can see. You are suggesting some axles have a smaller thread than this?

Had to replace my 142 x 12 rear axle on the Tempest. Overall axle length, length of threaded bit and, most importantly, thread pitch can vary between makes. What an absolute bourach! Found a Brand X one with a 1.5mm thread that was 2mm longer overall than the Planet X one. Perfectly secure but sticks out the side of the dropout by a couple of mm. Who in the industry thinks this nonsense up?

Looked at Robert Axle Project. Neither bikes are listed (Giant Trance SX 2016 & Ribble CGR Ti).

Have emailed Giant for clarification and got in touch with Ribble, although I'm reluctant to have another Ribble axle as the current one is pants.

Use the guide on the RAP site and get the measurements. Then email them and ask. They were very responsive when I needed and axle to tow a follow me tandem. They sell spacers so if there is an axle close then you can make it fit.

X-12 is a syntace system not just a design with a taper.
