[#2862321]

Got an EBC Revolution trailer, which comes with cheap tyre on it. Decided to replace said tyre. Said tyre says 16x1.75 on it, so I obtain ONE OF THESE in 16in flavour

Tyre is waaaay to big though. On measuring with a tape, the old tyre is 12in internal diameter, the new one 14in.

I just checked and the ERTO numbers differ 305 & 349, but why would I check the rather than the printed tyre size before ordering?

WTF is going off here????

Diameter marked is external to tyre peter. Go measure a 26 inch.....although why the tyre is wrong I have no idea, soz....Try ordering a brompton tyre? Or dahon? They are 16 inch.

See also 26" MTB tyre and 26 X 1 3/8 tyre on 50s british bikes. If you want an answer to your question - or as good an answer as you are going to get - then try this article by Sheldon Brown.

in the early days of cycling, every country that manufactured bicycles developed its own system of marking the sizes. These different national sizing schemes created a situation in which the same size tire would be known by different numbers in different countries. Even worse, different-sized tires that were not interchangeable with one another were often marked with the same numbers!

Dunno, but CRC once sold me a 650b tyre as a 26"
I'd not use them again for anything other than standard tyres.

Ratadog - that's the explanation crc gave me and they wouldn't pay for return postage.

That is always a lesson that has to be learned for new kids working in a bike shop; that some tyres that are the same size are in fact different sizes. I fell foul of it as a youth.

650B is yet another 26 inch standard, this time a french one otherwise known as 26 x 1 1/2 😯

Crucial number is the ISO ( formerly ETRTO ) number which for 26" MTB is 559

FWIW it took me the best part of a week some years ago to realise that Continental label its tubes for 29ers as 28ers - both 622 ISO - and therefore the tubes I needed were easily available after all.

Aye, but according to Sheldon there are a total of 3 different ISO sizes all called 16 X 1 3/8 plus at least 2 other different 16" tires as well.

Best of British
