Fed up with wet Wales so next year would like to organise a camping/biking trip to the Alps. Looking at mainly XC routes with the possibility of some less gnarly downhill routes, Morzine stands out as a possible destination, is it possible to ride routes unguided?
Morzine/Portes du soleil is good cos you have access to loads of lifts. You only need one lift pass aswell. Theres loads of tracks and you dont need a guide.
I've been told Les Arcs or Verbier is perhaps better for xc but its also best to use a guide in these areas aswell.
Sure you can do it unguided, but feel if your there for a week spend the cash to get a company who knows the place like the back of their hand and all the best trails.
We go to the Alps unguided, no problem if you can understand maps 🙂

Close to Morzine but in the Grand Massif region which is great for XC and finding your way round on your own.

You can quite easily find your own way around in the PDS, and people are generally more than happy to let others tag along. Get talking to people at Bar Robinson in the evenings, most are friendly.
There are also enough route guide/books to keep you entertained.
Having also ridden Verbier (albeit from a DH perspective) there are a hell of a lot less riders, so it might be a little harder to find your way around.

I've heard that lots of the XC routes around the PDS have been marked as no access for bikes? That they're keen for bikers to stay in the 'bike park'. Any truth in this, or just usual rumour?
Just do Trans Provence 2011, you get a map and signage, a tent, all your food, morning uplifts and cycle 300km from near Gap across the Alpes Maritime to Monaco accessing some of the finest ST you could ever wish to see (and some of the steepest)through amazing scenery. what more could you ask for............
