Camping just south of the city for a couple of weeks. Not been before. Predominantly going for the beaches, surf etc. Is it worth taking a bike? Any decent trails in striking distance (I'm sure there are). Advice and experiences appreciated.

To the north there are lots of paths through the pine forests. Undemanding cycling but I once was confronted by a wild boar there, good sprint practice. Bike might also be useful for day trips to e.g. San Sebastian. I found the break a bit crowded at Biarritz, you might find quieter breaks to the north of there. Typically liberal views towards the swimming costumes in that area, which can enhance a day on the beach.
On the way back drop by the Medoc region for a case of claret, not dirt cheap but good enough to drink sparingly and half the price you'd pay here.

Chateau Poujeaux, Moulis-en-Medoc, is well worth seeking out. It does not have a large chateau to support and consequently the wines are well priced. I was recommended this place by a local oenologist who had worked in all the region's estates. I bought a case then kicked myself on my return for not having bought more when we did a blind tasting with Waitrose wine at the same price, blimey there was no comparison. The Poujeaux wine produced tears of joy.

Good mate of mine and a local does lots of iron man road bike training there.

@BillMC, thanks for the wine tip I'll check it out. However you cannot compare French prices with the UK, the £10 wines we buy direct in Burgundy are better than their £25-30 equivalents in UK.

No trails to speak of around there but 20 mins in a car towards the border will have you in some amazing riding country. If you're a GPS user I can link you to some of my favourite trails around there.

@Bob_summers I am heading that way in August, so would appreciate the GPS of trails within an hour or two's driving of Biarritz.
