[Closed] Bikepacking - large saddle pack query

Looking at getting a large saddle rail mounted pack. Looked at Ortlieb saddle pack which seems ideal, but their website states that 14cm of seatpost is required visible for fitting. Mine only has about 90mm (100mm at a stretch) visible. Does anyone know of a suitable alternative? Looking for around 10 litres upwards carrying capacity. Thanks.

Cheapest would be directly mounting an Alpkit tapered Airlok bag. However you are likely to get a bit of sway with that.

I was going to suggest a Wildcat Tiger but their website says it needs 175mm of seat post so not suitable.

How come so little seat post? How big a gap between seat and rear wheel? My wife has similar problems with fitting a seat pack on her fat bike. We solved it by using an Arkel Randonneur seat post mounted rack and simply strap the bag on top of that.

Bike is a traditional horizontal top tube road bike, hence little seatpost showing. I've since looked at the Alpkit range. They have a 7 litre bag requiring 15cm from saddle rails to top of wheel, so need to measure that, but they don't state room needed on seatpost.

Ah, makes sense. One of the unintended benefits of sloping top tubes.

someone makes a seatpost mounted metal cantilever bag support that might be perfect. Someone might remember enough to google it for you... ? I've just had a quick go and can't find it.

And/or I can fit my tiger to my roadbike tonight and let you know what happens if you've got less than 17.5 cms available.

Or you can go full audax/tourey and look at the carradice SQR mount bags or the bags that use the bagman supports.

@nedrapier - it's the Arkel Radonneur that I mentioned in my first post.

whitestone - the one I had in mind was more like this, but it was just the hinged metal bracket at the bottom

while I was poking around, I found this, which looks like a great solution to a waggy bag, and relies much less on the seatpost attachement to stabilise the bag

Have you looked at the Uraltour saddle bags?

There's a Canadian firm that sells a dropper compatible one (i.e. no seatpost needed) -

Not sure about shipping to UK

I know you said rail mounted but on my road bike for commuting on rough lanes I use a Carradice Super C SQR Slim thats seatpost mounted, brilliant bag. Just a thought..

Thanks for all the good ideas. I think they all hang to low or don't match my short seatpost requirement, but I'm keen to get more suggestions. The closest I've yet found is the Alpkit Wombat.

Uraltour saddle bags are the worst i have ever used. The concept was good the quality of materials and clips were crap.

I ended up lashing mine to the saddle with paracord about 20 minutes after starting a coast to coast.

Oh dear, I've just ordered one for some light bikepacking - roads and easy tracks. Was it crap all the time or just off-road when bouncing around? Could you do a homemade fix to improve the straps?

Maybe the regular apidura might fit?

You would need to change the buckle and the tensioners on the ural

The buckle pulls out any time tensions put on it

Plus the "cordura a like" isn't up to much. Mines got used on one 5 day trip and binned.

The ural tour frame bag is reasonably good though

Herself has the Arkel rack and bag and it's pretty good. On Tuscany Trails last year it kept the stuff inside dry in the "rain" unlike my Apidura seatbag.

MarkiMark,

Here's my wildcat tiger on my cross bike. Best pic I could find. I've not done up the seatpost strap properly, so it doesn't look quite right, but I've used it loads of times on this bike with no issues. I think the worst that would happen is that the strap would sit on the seatpost collar and scuff the plastic strap buckle/loop thing. You'd get it tight and non waggy - most of that's in the packing, really - it might just sit at a slightly shallower angle to the ground.
