Great shame - only discovered it fairly recently, and it seemed too good to be true.

Just wish Memory Map would do a Mac version.

It seems to disappear every few months, only to come back a few days later. Every time I panic and then breathe a sigh of relief because none of the others even comes close, and I have tried them all.

I would gladly help the guy with hosting and maintaining the site if it meant this didnt happen but now it is down I wouldnt know how to get hold of him.

How was bikehike run?
I would be happy to have the software running from my server.
Does anyone know who was running bikehike, was he a MTBer?

I've been trying to get hold of him to see if I can help out (I run a hosting company) but he's quite good at keeping his contact details hidden. If anyone has contact details, please let me know.

I was emailing Simon on admin@bikehike.co.uk a couple of years ago. No idea if that's still valid.

i've emailed him previously...a couple of years back though when he was having issues over a conflict of the database of routes he used to host and a publisher.

will see if i can dig out the email.

edit: simon1975 beat me to it - that's the email I contacted BikeHike Simon on a while back.

Shame if its gone - it was a great resource.

Will be such a shame if bikehike disappears, it is by far the best route plotting website on the web IMHO.

I am sure it will be back - seems to do this a couple of times a year for up to a week at a time. Just when you think it is dead & buried, it pops up again. Hopefully that is the case now.

Would be worth finding out what the problems are though and seeing if we can do anything to help avoid it in the future.

BTW Simon posts on bikeradar - http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12672783&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20

An alternative might be http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/ ?

+1 for Bike Route Toaster. Uses OpenCycleMap. Very good for planning road rides.

As mentioned above and as advertised here yesterday

MTB TRAILS INFO

look absolutely brilliant.

I think the best bit is that instead of searching for routes you find a trail head (ie car park etc) then you can see all the trails from the trail head.

MTB Trails does not show Open Cycle Maps which is really useful at times and more importantly does not automatically follow routes on either google maps or Open Cycle Maps (obviously) - so it would be a laborious task to create the 140 mile route that I want to do from Bournemouth to Brighton...

BikerouteToaster is usable, but not great. No OS maps I could live with (just) but you dont seem to be able to move a point once it is set - so you have to get it perfect at each step and cant go back and change things or deviate from the automatic route.

Last time it was down I tried to email the guy who runs it suggesting it might be worth introducing a small fee to use it as the service is obviously greatly valued by all who use it, but the email was bounced back. I’d happily pay a few quid a month to be able to access it as its by the far the best online mapping service with OS maps. Hope it comes back soon
