Currently setting up a work area for my mountain bike,
Anyone got any good hacks for use in a bike workshop (storage hacks etc.)?
Thanks for any replies!
Polly pipes capped off for zip ties and spokes.
Hot water hose pipe
@duncancallum
Do you use an end cap as the bottom/base?
Can do. Mines just glued. And zip tied to the inside cupboard door.
Any broken rims lying around? If so cut it into 3 bits and screw it to the wall then hang tyres or spare wheels on them.
Cut a 3rd of a rim in half and screw them to the wall at 700mm apart then use them to hold handlebars
@dhrider
This is a great idea! I need something to hang my coat on aswell do could use it for this!
Old knackered inner tubes. Twist them up and use them as bungees to hold more of life’s flotsam and jetsam up to the shed ceiling.
Ye like the collection of bikes I have
Oh flat bars on a stem with bar ends as a coat and helmet rack. Underneath I have a greenhouse tube heater for drying kit
Assuming you're in a garage of some sort: paint the walls with white exterior paint. Keeps the dust down and helps improve lighting.
Get a decent tool chest for all the tools.
A bike stand makes life so much easier
When did tips suddenly become hacks?
I use the work space for woodworking aswell so already have painted the walls white and have just acquired a workstand and it is great until I get a bike that doesn't have room to clamp the frame in 😂
I need to sort out tool storage and am thinking a chest with dividers is probably the best so thanks!
I've not tried it myself, but a workstand mounted off the ceiling is something I've heard about and might be interested in. I think BKXC has a video about his.
An old dishwasher rack on the wall. Handy for holding screwdrivers and other tools.
Ikea magnetic knife racks on the walls for all steel tools
I use IKEA magnetic knife racks, and those condiment tins they used to do for odds and sods.
Mine gets the Tourneo in as well for the extra security
Is it a sensible plan to post pics of the bikes/garage security?
Is that a portable compressor in your first pic? If so is it any good and would you recommend?
Yes its an Aldi one, it works great in popping on tubeless tyres in seconds or for blowing dust out of things like calipers, it came in their sale at just under £25 its only 240v. Comes with all the attachments.
We bought two and one stays in the camper for trail and race duties, its salvaged many a riders weekend. Its surprising how it gets around at races who has them.
Id recommend it for tyre duties, worth every penny, would buy again even at full price.
Have a BIL who is a carpet fitter and thus have a fully carpeted garage for free. Replace a few times a year when it gets minging.
So much nicer on the feet!

I think you'll find tips transitioned through solutions to arrive at hacks.
Tracey when was the compressor in at aldi? looks just the job!
@Tracey
That's a lot of bikes! I thought the 2 bikes I had was a lot! 😂
Ok, I now have workshop envy thanks to Tracey. That's amazing! These are also really good ideas for when i get to re-do the shed this summer (hopefully).
One thing I found really useful was modifying my work bench to take the cheap Aldi/lidl bike stand on the open corner. It projected out far enough in two directions that I could work on it for almost any angle, but could then be pushed back in to the bench to keep the bike out of the way.
@tracey
have you added a bike clamp to a tv bracket, or did you buy as one piece?
We have had the compressors for a few years but they do have them in on a regular basis.
Our local Lidl had a similar one in at the weekend.
All the bikes aren't mine. All the family ride, the good thing is that they ate all now medium as the girls have grown so I can swing my leg over any of them.
Bike stand is attached to a modified TV stand, it was one for a big heavy TV and is sturdy enough for an ebike. It swings back against the wall when not in use.
I love Tracey's security layers
Just needs a tiger in there surely?
The cheap front wheel hangers off ebay/Planet X are great for about £2 each - got 4 of the bikes vertically in my garage, 3 on 'hangers' and 3 chained down on the floor.
