I'be just built up a hardtail frame as a road going MTB - but it's
hurting my knees - comparing it to other bikes
I have no problems with - the seat tube angle looks very steep.
I'm running old 420mm RC31s on the front with 1.5" slicks - if the
front is too low could that be messing up the geometry and giving me the knee pain ?
Any ideas on how to solve this or do I need an older retro frame ?
Cheers,

AMNAE but those are not the usual causes
Look at saddle height, pedal/cleat alignment.
it's the relationship between seat, pedals and bars you need to look at (mostly the first two).
the steepness of the head angle might move yout weight forward onto your hands but that would give neck/shoulder pain not knee.
I'd measure the pedal to saddle top height and saddle to middle of stem and then compare with your other bikes.
of course it may just be that you spend more time pedlaing when on the road than off and you notice it more.
Thanks for the responses - I've already messed about with saddle height but even forward on the rails it doesn't feel far enough back - and then looking at the seat tube angles I thought that might be why - as the distance from the middle of the saddle from the centre point of the cranks isn't as big

surely that's just a product of how high the seat is, not the angle of the seat tube?
Steep seat tube angle is good for road bikes afaik? Mine's very steep and the position feels a lot faster than a slacker mtb.

They are all inter-related, but I don't really see why seat angle matters if the seat is the correct height.
Cleats, pedals and saddle were all used on another bike with no problem - the saddle height is pretty much the same as other bikes - so the seat angle was the only other thing I could think off as to why my knees hurt within 15 mins of getting on it.
But it looks as though that might be a red herring - my only other thought was this plumbline fron knee to pedal idea - anyone used that effectively ?
