After some advice on bike carrying solutions please for two Santa Cruz's?!

I have a 2012 VW beetle with rear spoiler. I can't fit roof bars because it has rimless windows and am currently reluctant to have to strip the bike to go in the boot.

Have tried a Saris Bones rear carrier but we struggled to get the bikes to actually fit.

Any advice on other (tried and tested) solutions?

Can I suggest not Sea Suckers as that just works on vacuums You are responsible for a safe load, so they won't join you in court if it goes wrong.

If you are on carbon then most manufacturer's recommend not clamping the frame.

By coincidence I run a company that provides a tyre grip rear towbar mount cycle carrier company. Soon to be featured by Singletrack, and fits 2 MTBs.

Will you join in court if it all goes wrong with your rack or is that scaremongering only open to things you cannot see functioning ?

Rookie marketing fail - never rubbish other people’s stuff it makes you sound like a complete prat. Let your product speak for itself. You’ve already put more people off than you’ve got interested.

I was alerted to the concern of vacuum type roof carriers by the International Standards Organisation, which I am a committee member of.

Other members of ISO recommended that this type of carrier be banned. The standard is being drafted at the moment, but I thought I should bring this to forum users as someone was recommending in previous post.

Sorry if this is bad marketing but beware.

mintcake,

You can definitely get roof bars to fit your beetle, my wife has a 2013 with spoiler, which will be the same shape as yours, we had the same issue as I don't think you can actually get a towbar for a beetle either, so after much searching I found that Mont Blanc do still make a roof bar/foot combination that fits the beetle, we have these plus two Thule carriers and they have stayed put over the last year without issue. Monc Blanc are the only manufacturer to make mounts for this model beetle, strange but true.

You just need to find a Mont Blanc dealer who is happy to order them in..

hope this helps

Thanks for all help and suggestions!

carbonjones - I shall have a look into this! I hadn't heard of this company and had pretty much resigned myself to not being able to get roof bars and that my car was unpractical! We have Thule carriers on my other halves car so can transfer those across.

You need a bikewagon, if you love your bikes enough obviously. Estate car worked for me.

Seasuckers are really good. I've had a bike come off at speed on a Thule due to incorrectly installed bolt (probably my fault) but my Seasucker rack has never shifted. 12hrs at 80mph through France and it's not budged even a little.

cinnamon_girl - Me and the OH have been looking at getting an XC90 instead of our slightly (very) less practical cars ... but I just love my Beetle too much to sell it!

@mintcake - I guess it depends on how often you use the car for riding and whether you'll lose riding time due to faffing around with racks. Having had a Thule rack fail and watched my bike bounce along a dual carriageway I prefer bikes inside the car despite the inevitable mess.
