must be compact and have a custom self timer (i.e. not a set time of 2 or 10 secs)
any recommendations?

GoPro Hero 2. You can set it to take pictures at whatever time interval you choose. It takes spectacular 11 MP pics too much better than my Panasonic Lumix FT2.
