We're thinking about the States for this year's trip, when we've been before (Moab) we've hired from local bike shops as I'm pretty sure Continental were charging $80 per per per flight (including internals).
What experience have folk got of the current charges on the usual airlines?
cheers
Flew to Canada (Vancouver) with my bike, paid £20 out, and $60CAD back, which I complained about as it wasn't exactly consistent with what I was told before travelling. I did get a refund after a couple of phone calls. That was with Air Transat, I did say I would never use them again as there was no tv for our daughter to watch, but they are a lot cheaper than the alternatives and now we have an iPad we could take to keep her occupied. 8 hours is a lot of storybooks to read back to back!
Canada is much cheaper than USA. The US-based airlines seem to have standardised on $200 each way.
I even tried to get around it by booking with KLM operated by Delta. Got stung for $200 again.
EDIT: The $200 did at least cover the entire journey including connections
As Aidan says its $200 each way 🙁
I don't pre book and take my chances at the airport .. BA will accept bike as checked luggage so I always make sure my first leg flight I check in with BA but on return from US I expect to get charged.
Rental bikes in Moab are top notch though.
I know that some carriers can allow 2 hold bags. Get your your luggage in one suitcase, and your bike goes in as the second bag.
Yep $200 each way now with US carriers.
I've flown to the US with my bike several times. Sometimes the check in folks in Edinburgh let it go free, but I'd always have to pay on the return leg. I'm thinking twice now about such trips.
I've a feeling BA are much more reasonable which is fine if they fly where you want to go.
I just booked with BA and paid £34 a leg
