oh yeah, dawes cougar was the best .......531 lovelyness
my first MTB in 1985 was Kona ciner cone in white with red spots,, then it got stolen and replaced by scott pro racer with WP rond forks about 1990
my scott is still out there
I remember the first ever mountain bike I saw was a Kuwahara in a bmx mag, must have been about 1984.
We thought it looked like a good idea, so started making our own from old raleigh bombers, brazing on canti brake mounts. We even welded on a second bb above the original to raise the bb height. Worked ok but we would bend the forks every ride doing jumps.
I then got a raleigh maverick in 1985, bolted on racks, bashguards and all sorts of heavy steel bits and then raced cyclo-cross on it.
Circa 1987 my dad bought one of these, which I pinched to race at the Blandford Surftracks. It was a revelation after the raleigh, weighs about half as much, and is still sat in my dads garage with all the original bits on, biopace, u-brake etc
