Hi guys, any of you working in the cycle industry ? Can you tell me what qualifications I would need to work as a shop mechanic please, i am quite competent having built up most of my own bikes myself but obviously I would need a qualification to work in a shop,
Thanks in advance for any help. Ian

think perhaps most employers are looking for Cytech trained mechanics... http://www.thecyclingexperts.co.uk/cytech/

Cytech is generally the one asked for.

My mate works for ATG training, doing Cytech. I'm sure he said something about people in England (and working for a bikedhop I guess) can get a grant towards it. I can get you his Email if you want.

Just try to get a job and with any luck after a while your employer may put you through the course. The alternative is the C&G course.

Best time go get in is the spring, unfortunately many bike shops are entering a quieter period so may be less like to be hiring, give it a go though. Best time to start writing letter / filling in forms late feb / early march. Shops are looking for staff to get trained up ready for the busy summer season. You will probably start off mainly building bikes. I typed up a cover letter to go with my CV and explained that although my CV was not that relevant I had been building bikes for years, worked on my own car, done labouring, built wheels for people so show that I had mechanical aptitude. It worked and I got a job. Not working in a bike shop now but I hope that helps Good luck.

And a few beers now & then.

I'm a self taught bike mechanic working in a LBS, I've been repairing bikes for 20 years, as a kid I broke it = I fixed it.

I have asked about relevant qualifications, the gaffer thinks that in my case it'd be a waste of time, I'd still like to have them though.

I'd been a long time customer of my LBS, popped in to pick up some parts, walked out with a job

Salary for most LBS Spanner monkeys is not usually much above minimum wage. Bloody good job I like [s]biscuits[/s] bikes
