Okay, I am new to the idea of cleaning stuff. How do I get waterproof mud off my bike? The garden hose on jet setting washes some of the bigger lumps off but leaves a nice thin film of clay on the frame, tyres and drive train.

I could use a jet wash but seem to remember that is a bad idea. Brushes seem to just move the mud about and then get clogged up. At this rate I am going to have to use the wife.

get the big bits off all over then while it's still wet spray a load of this on it:

use a brush/sponge to clean it all off then rinse again. easy.

let it dry and do some of the larger jumps in LW to shake the mud loose then, carry the bike down to the stream and wash the reamaining mud off using only lint free localy sourced cotton.

What common house hold cleaner is similar to MucOff then?

I used to have that problem with my frame, to stop it I cleaned the frame lovingly by hand , then polished the frame with a good quality car wax, bike cleans nicely now.
