So far, I've always had the desired result with the evoc bike bag but what I'd really love is a buxum bike box.
Our daughter has travelled all over with a Polaris Axial Pod bag. Fits a 29 Enduro in and away of gear. Never had any damage

Why not get yourself to your nearest bike shop and see if they have one to rent? I've done the same previously with an evoc bike bag but I've bought one now and highly recommend it!
Where are you OP? Many shops rent them, I’ve rented from 18 Bikes before. Now got an Evoc one for my 29er Cotic which fits fine and room to spare for shoes, pads and spare tyres etc.
I would always, always, always take a box over a bag. Got a really solid old one which is great but heavy, and category, which I've been really impressed with. Folds flat but is still robust and light. Battered and dented now but never any problems with problems with contents

I used a Dakine bag for years when heading to the Alps with my DH bike; it was the only bike bag big enough to comfortably fit a DH bike in but I'm sure there are others now. The Dakine has/had (not sure they still make them) a rigid frame so the bike was properly protected.
There's actually one here on eBay in North Yorkshire for £35! Has to be cheaper than even renting one and they make useful storage when you're not using them.
2nd the Polaris.
They often have a sale and end up at 200quid
