Mayhem / SITS / Bonty 24 .... any 24hr event will be fun (& dry) this year.
Thay're not fun, but it's great when you've finished them & slump into a dreamless stupor!
(made harder if you don't ride Ti of course!)
All Marin riders wear sandals and have beards.
No wait, they do.
SS = beards (surely).
SS = beards (surely).
Nope. SS = handlebar moustaches! This is 2010 you know..
You cant ride in the peak district without suspension.
"All Mountain Bike" What a stupid title. You can ride any bike all over a mountain.
People who get all upset about names for things.
Funny, there's a lot of stuff here I think is true.
Serious Q jedi, I can hop/wheelie to certain standard but if I switch to rigid forks, same bike, same geom how come I can't lift the front end half as well?
edit, you're going to tell me I'm doing it wrong aren't you? damn.
'People who ONLY ride trail centres sure they are fun but surely
you want t see somewhere remote and proper countryside?'
Disagree. I go hiking to properly see the countryside.
I'd rather ride something challenging with nice flowing jumps and berms.
People who misunderstand the term "all-mountain": It is a term to describe a style of riding that incorporates jumps, drop-offs, DHing, north shore obstacles etc, as well as riding to the top - all within the same ride, but is generally geared more towards the gravity aspect of riding bikes.
I don't usually like such categorisations, but I actually think it is quite a useful term to describe what a bike is designed to do.
It is, however, probably more appropriate to places like Canada where the trails are designed to incorporate the above features: Check out Kill me Thrill me or Daminal, just outside of Whistler, for the very definition of "all-mountain".

Well I am not jedi clearly but I am the opposite I find it easier and higher with rigid/locked out and not clipped in as I learnt from BMX days. Perhaps because you are used to compressing first and I am not. If you push down on your front forks the rebound will not actually get the wheel in the air. perhaps I should bounce more with suspension? Awaits the input of riding god

Actually I am much more interested in the riding than the scenery. That's not to say that I won't occasionally remember to look up and see the pretty views, but I'm not inclined to head out somewhere remote unless the trails are going to be fun. Generally I find that trail centres provide a lot of enjoyable singletrack and even at a trail centre there's the occasional break in the pine trees where a nice view can be seen. ๐
The biggest load of tosh? Any opinion that's based on a personal preference but has been expanded so that it must apply to all. E.g.
"People who ride at trail centres aren't proper mountain bikers."
"All Shimano/SRAM/Fox/Rock Shox kit is terrible and should never be used."
"Singlespeeding is stupid and anyone who does it is stupid too."
Etc.
I love nature first. Riding close second. Just love being out there ๐
Don't have time to read all this, could someone do a three word summary for me?
Don't have time to read all this, could someone do a three word summary for me?
"Everyone speaks tosh"?
It's all good
if you buy anything and in the sentance describing it you mention the dirty word "halfords" you are an idiot who cant ride to save his life and has just been completely ripped off.
in short, drop mtbing and find another hobby, you are nothing but a clueless fool!
Trail naming
and yes i do have a boardman!
(closes curtains and hangs head in shame, as ive been told to do) ๐
I love those types who have obviously spent hours on cross-trainers, road bikes and practice in private - then try and show you up to prove they are a better rider than you. They can ride to the top of the climb and then look down on you.
Funnily the joy of mountain biking is about just getting out there and enjoying yourself.
trail naming + 1

Get a turbo trainer then ๐
Surely part of it is to get somehwere away from built up areas towns - see these pics and tell me you are not inspired?

I am not anti trail centres I do ride them but less often than natural stuff and this should tell you why
is Jaun and the rest of the riders on here really at a standard where they think it is easy?
Typical insecure types who claim something is easy, so that you then look inferior to them, and they can feel smug without appearing deliberately arrogant...

+1. I was and am. Amazing. Made me want to kick over my desk and set off.
- People who get to the bottom of a descent first and that makes them naturally a better rider than any others. You know, at times anyone could get down that descent on the edge and as fast as possible but not everyone is out to show off or prove something that doesnt need proving huh?How I see it. No matter what you ride or how well you ride you are never a better cyclist (or person) than the next man or woman.
Dude. You have surpassed yourself. This is truly superb tosh. Take a bow. ๐
Glad I put a smile on a few peoples faces - certainly made me smile. Keep it to yourself .... but we even rode the red trail at Whinlatter one afternoon after the morning on Helvellyn - Nice to actually ride up a hill rather than shoulder your bike
Actually I am much more interested in the riding than the scenery

I tried a turbo trainer once. Your mileage may vary but for me it was like what cycling would be like if cycling were 100% evil.
The riding includes more than just the exercise I could get from a turbo trainer. Singletrack, fast and swoopy bits, technical climbs and descents, rocky things, switchbacks (both up and down) are all important and I get more of a kick from them than I do from looking at the views as I ride.
Surely part of it is to get somehwere away from built up areas towns - see these pics and tell me you are not inspired?
Yes that's a part of it and your photos are very good. However the views are simply not the most important part of it for me. I can have a good ride even if I stay deep within an FC forest for the entire thing and never see any inspiring vistas.
It is perhaps interesting to note that when looking at your photos it doesn't take me long to stop looking at the views in the background and to start looking at the singletrack in the foreground and wondering what it's like to ride. ๐ I'm pretty sure I wouldn't manage all the rocky steppy stuff, though...
And just to prove I do occasionally straighten up and look around me:

Edit: Weirdly, nesting quoted sections seemed to work in the preview pane, but didn't when I actually posted my comment.

That's you Juan! ๐
Erm not really as I have no problem whatsoever in being arrogant ๐
FreerideNick those pics are AWESOME
Any chance of a peek at the routes you did, that sort of stuff is why I'm into mountain biking.

Arrogance is a sign of insecurity. ๐
I though arrogance was a sign of superiority ๐
No, arrogance is a sign that you're not actually convinced yourself. IE, insecurity.
Anything you want to know about stuff, you ask me.
Apart from pressure/area/force/rims/tyres...
Oh and to add to the OP;
It's better to go to your LBS for everything, rather than shop online...
You should 'just' pull the bike up for jumping or riding off normal drops.
"I am not anti trail centres I do ride them but less often than natural stuff and this should tell you why"
Ah, there's some classic grade A mountain biking tosh. "Natural stuff"- just looked at your flickr page and those trails look exactly as "natural" as most trail centres, and more intensively surfaced and manmade than some.
Natural trails are better than Trail centres - no they are just different and still a valuable / enjoyable part of MTBing.
Beards are the new Camelbaks!
lol
hmm. I'm gonna leap in with both feet right at the start of todays 'natural versus trail centre' bickering..
What is the actual real world difference between trail centres and wild trails..? (see how I used wild there instead of natural to avoid any fresh circular arguments over terminology.. )
If you don't understand the diffference between trail centres and wild trails.. then I'm afraid that you can't buy the answer.. I can't make you understand the answer.. and I couldn't GIVE you the answer even if I wanted to..
the answer is S.O.U.L. man.... soul
That reminds me
"This bike has Soul"
I like both and understand the value of both to MTB but don't favour one over the other
I was thinking of riding Penmachno tomorrow. Erm, should I not?! Confused.
Do it! Its all riding ๐
Are you sure? What if I chose to wear elbow and knee pads as my boss has pointed out that if I hurt myself he might take a dim view on sick pay? Should I risk it because some random strangers who I've never met or will never see again will look down on me? ๐
