If I put a front chainring on a 1x bike that quite a bit bigger than stock - say six teeth , the bike will need a longer chain but will there be any concerns with the rear mech?
This isn’t my bike, I’d something I heard suggested and I just can’t figure it out in my head.
We are not worried about chain stay clearance etc at this point, just the rear mech.
Can't think of anything in that sense. I've run a LOT bigger, i've just gone from a 36T to a 46T..
Rear mech doesn't care about front ring for 1x, it only has to handle the capacity of the cassette
Might have some implications for anti squat and stuff like that if it's a full suss, they are general designed around the stock ring size, but would't worry about that.
Also check that the bigger front ring will fit with the driveside chainstay.

On a 1x setup, the derailleur capacity isn't affected by changing the chainring, only the range of the cassette. On a 2x or 3x you need to include the difference between the smallest and largest chainrings.
Yeah that’s right, I’d (incorrectly) thought that a bigger ring meant longer chain and more potential for slack when on the little ring on the cassette.
That’s what you get for not thinking about things properly 🙂
