[Closed] BIG Rings... where did my ramps go?
OK, I should have known better but I tried to do it on the cheap, replaced chain cassette and middle ring, the granny sucks like a madman, and though the big ring works fine once I get the chain onto it, the shifting ramps have completely worn off it, so its a mare to go from middle to big... Anyone else ever worn the shifting ramps off one?
XT if that matters...
Have ordered a chepo deore granny to go with the deore middle I bought earlier and a mate is giving me an outer as he has gone to a bash ring, so luckily I dont need to buy the outer...
What? The shifting ramps are built into the profile of the ring, you can wear them off surely?
yup completely smooth, they are steel inserts in the alloy ring, but they are flush with the ring inner face.
I just don't shift out of my big ring often enough to wear them ๐
njee20.. your a racer arent you? at risk of turning this into a tyre thread, and my pride wont do it... you ever used Kenda SB8's?
I am indeed, the only time I've ever used them was testing a bike in the wet, they were truly disastrous, really really bad, but they've never been marketed as a mud tyre! I'd personally choose the Racing Ralph every time.
crap, I need someone to tell me how fast they are, and I am going to rip up the trail with my awsome speed on sunday.....
I feel like shit my bike isnt right, and its last round of a local series and I fighting with another fat old git like myself..
Well I've never washed out so fast on muddy corners, so you should be fine ๐
I know a number of people who do rate them, sure you'll be fine! Just keep the elbows out and get into the singletrack first! And keep it in the big ring.
SB8s are silly fast on dry trails and grip nicely too. Absolutely awful on anything wet as njee found out...
Its bone dry around here right now, as long as I have not cursed the weather by putting them on last night should be ok... saved 200g over my old tyres so thats good. ordered some light tubes along with my new granny ring so another 200g there, every little helps, and nearly 1lb off the wheels must be good right???.
edit... what the ferk has happend to me, only enter a few races a year just for the hell of it, and now ive gone and got all competitive... must chill out...
Should've got a Furious Fred for the back if it's dry. They are stupidly fast. And slightly scary with it!
See... now it's become a full on tyre thread!
Don't fit that granny ring, there's another few grammes, plus the time advantage as you just have to push a bit harder in the middle ring. The weight weenie tendancies will come, don't fight it.
ha ha, ive had worse, when my wifes bike got knicked it was wearing my race tyres, Conti Twister Supersonics and I used to run em both ends...
Weight Weenie already.
My race bike that got knicked was a Ti 1x9 ๐ฅ been racing my full sus that was in alps trim since (still pretty light though)... but built all the bits from that onto a Scandal frame last weekend, so that should also help me out on sunday :-).
