I have a friend who happens to be a casual cyclist with a deceptively large head. He would like a helmet and would like to spend no more than £40. Any recommendations or suggestions? He is already keen to try and buy in store rather than mail order.
Helmet debate is definitely not required nor are suggestions of additional lube or relaxation.

I have a fat head and find that I can only wear Spesh or Giro helmets. You might struggle at that price point though.

I picked up my fox flux for £38 from Stif. Unless he is bigger than companies make helmets for he won't have a problem.
£30 Specialized Max and £40 Giro Venturi are both specifically for oversized bonces - bigger than the standard ones all recommended above 🙄
A colleague used to find Bell helmets (ooer) were the best fit for him - it might even have been a Kingpin? though I can't find that model anywhere.

I find MET fit my largeish (~60cm) head very nicely. More down to head shape than size though IMO 🙂
I have a MASSIVE head - 61cm I think - and the only helmets that fit me ok are Giro, but only the ones where I can choose a L/XL size, rather than a one size fits all design.
I think the main problem with a lot of helmets is that if you have a big noggin you are generally at the extreme end of what it's meant to fit well to, so how the straps/pads are positioned can be critical. I had a rented helmet in the USA recently and while it was big enough it was really uncomfortable as the pads were in the wrong place for my head.
It's also worth looking for a helmet design which goes around the head rather than perched on top of it, helps it look a little smaller on you.
I can't really recommend my helmet as it is a £120 Giro E2 which is out of budget. At the time I couldn't find another helmet to fit me and the E2 was the only one I could choose. They don't make it any more and I am very concerned about what happens when I need a new one!

So far I win head size top trumps, 62.5 cm just after a haircut. Currently rocking a Met crossover XL to pleasing effect.
Agree with head shape being important, I've had to send mail order jobbies back, size fine in theory but just wouldn't sit right.

Giro, the only reliable large sizing for people who are a bit 'gifted' in the brain department. Like myself.
