Hello there. It's been a while since I've been riding around Callander but, in a quest to get away from the slop on the local overused trails, I was thinking about heading out that way on Sunday.
Does anyone have any trail recommendations? Looking for something that is a bit more focused on good views and weatherproof routes rather than technical stuff (but really interested if I can mix both together).
Cheers,
James.
Iit further into the Trossachs and it's a been a few years since I've done it but (weather dependant) the views are great and the descent has a good amount of technical; Ben Venue. Bit of bike portage on the way up, mind.
Might even be able to dig up a GPX.
Where's your local area?
Dunblane and Bridge of Allan. Love the riding round here but over the last few years, so many more folk are using the trails and they are just slop at the moment (but still fun as shown by a good blast round Dumyat today).
Ben Venue sounds an option (what's big country riding without hike-a-bike?).
I've done Glen Finglas a couple of times in the past but I'd heard about some newer tracks to the North of Loch Venachar that you could use to get to the bottom of the Glen Finglas path and then loop round and come back via the South side of Venechar.
There are some nice connecting routes but TBH all suffering in current conditions. As one of the main local clubs in the area we (GMBC) are trying to give them a miss and use trail centres more for a bit where we can have fun riding and not add to the damage
I know the feeling. Sad to hear that even the less used "big country" trails are cutting up badly.
Ben Ledi as an alternative..? Some lovely bits in the woods below Stank Glen. Again, I haven't a clue what state they're in!
Ben Ledi. Good shout.
That's why I was thinking it might have held up pretty well. The track looks like it is pretty much based on light gravel bedded in. Should hold up well to weather.
Should do as they're walkers paths. I've done Ben Venue about three or four time over the last ten years or so and it has seemed more eroded each time so share iainc's thoughts on avoiding some trails.
Cheers all.
Certainly a bit of hike-a-bike on the way up from Glen Finglas but the view from the top (actually a bit down) looking down your descent:
How do you get there from Glen Finglas? Is it the Balquhidder path via Glen Buckie?
How do you get there from Glen Finglas? Is it the Balquhidder path via Glen Buckie?
IIRC Those photos were from the time we started from Kilmahog; along the road to Brig o' Turk, up Glen Finglas, then turned off west along Gleann Casaig and up the track to Stuc Dhubh.
