Is it worth going for the 2.35" over the 2.15" version, or is the larger version much heavier / draggy?

Yes, as big as you can fit. I've turned a 29er into a roadbike and it's great the way it just swallows up whatever the road can throw at it.
You'll love the extra grip on fast winding descents.
Obviously not the choice if you're intending doing the local 10 TT, but great for about 99% of riding.
