Looking for a new set of padded shorts to wear under my mtb shorts, been using bib tights for the winter, would bib shorts be too hot in the summer?

No, I wear them all the time. I think I have one pair of non bibbed bottoms. But I don't wear flappy trousers over the top.

How long is a piece of string? You can always peel down the top if i remember correctly, havent worn bib shorts for many years, and of course summers were hotter back then...

Some bib-shorts have a lower waste line and mesh uppers. If the TDF riders can all manage to wear them then I can't see how you'd overheat in the UK. Of course, none of them feel insecure enough to have to put a baggy layer over the top.

I currently wear roadie lycra shorts (specialised) under my mtb baggies and will be switching to bib shorts, most of them are vest type on the top part and I don't see being hot as an issue.

All the bib shorts I've got are mesh at the top, if it's hot enough to unzip a jersey the bibs won't make much of a difference.

I find bib shorts quite warm in summer. If I bought some more I'd get the Castelli or similar ones that are pretty much just straps from the waist up.
