[#12899007]

Okay,so I lost my father to a stroke in January this year. I want to raise funds for Stroke support for obvious reasons.

Initially I had signed up to do a road ride of 50 miles. However my wife works for the Police, as a Case Worker, so gets to see the RTA's involving cyclists.

Is it possible to do the same distance on Zwift or another app thingymajingy?

London to Brighton?

They do an off road route if you want to use a MTB?

I did it once on an 80s BMX, was a proper challenge

Of course people do get knocked off and injured, but the chances are actually incredibly slim of you personally being hit. Join a sportive of the appropriate length and it'll even be marshalled and safety in numbers. You'll be right.

Yes, I'm of the same opinion, HOWEVER, my wife is a worry wort, and if you saw the pictures she's seen you would understand why.

You could do a 50-mile Zwift and have it report said ride on Strava so people could see you’ve done it. Whether anyone would be happy sponsoring you for such a non-feat is another matter 🤔

if you’re worried about road riding then a closed-road sportive might be the answer, there are less to choose from these days though and I think the only one left this year is in Scotland in Sept.

as above though, your chance of getting hit by a car during a regular sportive is incredibly small. Much more likely to get taken out by another rider! Surely just going for a normal MTB ride is massively more risky in terms of injury?!

Personally if you are a cyclist a 50 mile ride is not much of a feat to be completed.  do something more imaginative / harder / that will do some good?  sponsored litter pick paid per bag collected?

Do a closed road, 100 mile sportive. Then you're wife's happy, and it's the kind of challenge people will sponsor you for.

The London to Brighton off-road is a BHF one so that aligns with your charitable cause. They also do a Peak MTB event.

That sounds an ideal solution, at the end of the day I have ridden a virtual 50 miles, is it a non-feat?

At the end of the day I've ridden 50 miles.

My family aren't cyclists, so riding 50 miles isn't a walk in the park, and I don't ride 50 miles regularly.

Given you're asking the question jimster I guess you don't do many miles, which is fine. But you have to know that is basically **** all, right? Esp on zwift. A lazy 10 yo could do it.

Needs more thought - you're talking about honouring the memory of your father by raising money for a good cause.

Harsh, but true! But it also depends on who you tap up for sponsorship. Some people will think that's a Herculaneum effort and are a lot easier to impress...

50 miles on a trainer will be hard work and you will get very sore. You move round more when riding for real.

Personally I would ride 50 miles/100 k m on the road without a bat of an eyelid, I used to ride 50mile reliabilities.

As I said earlier, the boss is a worry wort, I am trying to strike the best of 2 deals.
1. Riding 50 miles in memory of my father
2. Keeping myself out of harm's way.

Doing a closed road Sportive isn't an option in Malvern.

How difficult would it be to ride 50 miles on Zwift?

Very sorry for your loss.  Why not Off road? SDW in a day is a serious effort with a minimal chance of being knocked off.  if you do the BHF ride it is well organised. i would give a tenner to your very good cause!

hang on is a stealth sponsorship plea banned?

How long is a piece of string 🤷‍♂️ It simulates hills, you could do a flat route which would be a piece of piss or you could do a very hilly route such as 4 Horsemen which is about 7000’ climbing in about 55 miles which is considerably more effort! Doubly so if you do the whole thing on an MTB rather than a road bike 😃

A couple of years ago I told friends and family that I was going to try and ride 300 km within a 30 day period on Zwift whilst in the middle of my chemotherapy. My target was £300 for Bowel Cancer UK. In the end I raised nearly 10 times that amount via a Just Giving page I'd set up for the challenge.

Zwift for me was the perfect way of doing this as not only could people follow my progress on Strava, some very good friends actually rode with me on some of my 'stages'.

I'd absolutely go for the Zwift option and set-up a just giving page alongside it. You'll be amazed at people's generosity. It's your challenge and you're the best person to judge how big a challenge that is, not this bunch of keyboard heroes.

B.
