Looking for a P7 torch, mostly for use as a torch but might use it as a helmet light. I want one that will take normal size batteries and comes from the uk.

Looks like some nice ones on Amazon for about £44, is that my best bet?

Get one from DX, they don't take much longer than a week to arrive (no duty/VAT to pay) and just buy a spare battery.
At the end of the day you going to need to buy rechargables, so it make no difference if it's a normal size or not.
The battery life on the medium/low beams are very reasonable - you don't need to run them on full beam for 'normal' torch uses (off bike).

My recommendation:
5 Mode P7 LED Torch http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12060
Charger http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.6105
Batteries http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5790
on and one of these http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2709 to convert the charger.

haven't check the price lately but should be around the £45 mark.

It works out £37ish with 4 batteries all from DX. I might as well go for that, thanks for the advice

not sure if 5 mode is worth it, as you really just want, low, high and off. The whole Lo > Mid > Hi > Strobe > SOS is just going to be a ball ache, to cycle through all the settings to get the high and low outputs.

I have just ordered this one, as it seemed to be the best comprise. Hopefully it will be as good as the others I have got.

I find the medium & low modes are very useful.... being as I have one MC-E torch (or did, I think i may have lost it on holiday) with 8 modes, it really isn't hard to move between the modes.

The low on the 2 mode torch is way too low, the medium a nice compromise IMHO, especially if he's going to use it as a normal torch - the high beam is too bright for 'normal' use.

I've got this charger from DX:

Takes a standard figure-of-eight plug, so need to faff with a shaving adapter or whatever.

Fair enough, I haven't tried the 5 modes personally I just didn't fancy the phaff.

I have just ordered some replacement lights for my missus, and I think I might have gone a little OTT. My lights which are more than bright enough are a AirBike SL1 (flood 670 lumens) and helmet light using a UltraFire WF-606A (spot 230 lumens). For her I have ordered a DX magicshine bike light (900 lumens, flood) and that torch (900 lumens, floody spot light).

yeah if my MC-E doesn't turn up I reckon I'll be replacing it with the magicshine, up till now I've been using the P7 & MC-E (and a dying HID which has now died) - but as alway the real issue with these light is not that one isn't enough, it's that all my m8's have one + a HID, so I need two to stop the shadows..

Am tempted to go for a Troutie special (well a 1000 lumen jobbie) but I reckon he's drummed up too much business on here and I can't wait that long...

Thats my concern, when I have ridden with mates with brighter lights yours just get swamped and you can't see shit.

The trout light does look very good, and if I start do a lot of very technical night riding I would be tempted. Looks great as well 😉

FB why?
The OP is: mostly for use as a torch but might use it as a helmet light. The magicshine is a bike specifc unit...

sorry when i read torch i thought he meant a light on the bars and then to swap to helmet mounted.

sorry with people using torches for handlebar lights i assumed he wanted it as a torch for the bike not for it's original intended uses 🙂
