Simple question really what's the best bet for the money for night riding. Have been looking at something like an exposure joystick & an electron terra as i've head it's best to go with both a head light & bar lights but can't help but wondering whether i'd be better off spending it all on something better/brighter for just the bars/noggin like a troute light. Tried searching but there's an awful lot of white noise on hear when using the search function re: lights. Also any really good online deals, links to same would be appreciated.
Thanks
Four4th.co.uk do a nice head one (1200 lumens) for under £200. A Troutie is a wee bit over £250 but all you'll ever need.
I thought these looked interesting. Likely to get good support in these early days for the company too.

There's a review in the last issue of Singletrack.
Although a Troutie does seem like the place to be if you can stretch.
I personally have been running a Dealextreme P7 bar mount and a dealextreme TR-801 torch as a helmet light and it is definitely a nice way to do it. (total cost <£80).
It's a while since I've used only a headtorch but I did find it slightly odd seeing no shadows. I didn't use it for long because of this.
Best? How do you define best?... Best value, best output, best design, best parts used to build it, best assembly craftman?
Lots of choice, What MTB reckon that Lumicycles LED3 is where it's at, but I'd be asking Troutie for a 7Up (or 2 "mini's" - I have one and it's ace) or Luminous for a 601 with that kinda money.
But also consider you can get a really good light for £50 from Dealextreme - Magicshine (or one with a UK plug, or one with the updated battery, or the totally updated version(it costs a little more).
Yes it's a £50 light, so doesn't compare quailty wise with the above, but buy two (or 5 if you wanted for your £250), one for the bars and one for the helmet & you've still only spent £100
have a look on classifieds mattmtb has a Exposure MaxxD for £200 and a Diablo for £125 so if you can stretch a bit a great set of lights.

How about a brand new mk2 toro for £250, nearly as bright as the 2010 maxx d, smaller and tidier on the bars and with a full 2 year guarantee. Save up some more for a joystick for your helmet later?
