[Closed] best Garmin map and route websites for download

Recently got a Garmin Edge 800 (actually got 2 for Xmas so one brand new in box never opened for sale soon £175) and not had a real chance to use it yet. I've got the discoverer 1-50k maps with it but the detail didn't seem that good when I zoomed in. I've read that the OS maps are expensive and have to be bought region by region. Can you guys point me in the direction of the best websites to download maps and routes from please preferably free ones?
Cheers

Ridewithgps.com works well

Has osm maps which have all the bridleways on etc

I think ridewithgps.com is the best for routes. Also check out http://www.scarletfire.co.uk/ for some tips coz it's quite an annoying little gadget at times.

Hmmm, I use a mix of a few different programs.

Memory Map for drawing my own routes (rare), but the detail is there and I was using it before there were the all the online choices.
GPSies.com is good for drawing and converting routes...in fact the conversion part is very good. It has other folks' rides on there too.
I also use Bikeroutetoaster.com, although that is only for drawing routes so I tend to use MM more.

EDIT: Mis-read your post and now realise you're looking for maps to put in the GPS. Do you really need to look at them when out riding? If so, you'd have been better off with a Satmap or one of the bigger Garmin's.

Base camp is free from garmion its very good for planning routes. Connect your 800 and select the os map and plot away. You will get the hang of it. Online mapping is ok but I find basecamp with os maps better IMHO.

800 is great in auto mode as it works just like a car sat nav

My favourite. Nice and clean interface.Only complaint would be it's a bit 'Scottish' - but then that's only because most of the users (and contributors) are Scots I guess.

My first call if I'm looking for a route to download to my GPS.

Hth

Another vote for OS getamap, though it doesn't do on-road routing.

Basecamp works well and will use whatever map is in the GPS.

Openstreetmap is variable. It never seems to have the tracks I need on it (I know - I should add them myself.)
