[Closed] Best front (mtb) mudguard at the mo?

I've been a long term fan of the Mudhugger FR. However cack-handed car-packing left me having cracked the front few inches off the one on my big bike, leaving me getting a good bit wetter.

So what's the best option at the mo - Mudhugger Evo or RRP Max? Ideally I'd like a bolt-on one, but they don't do a Cane Creek Helm friendly version. Needs to be 29x2.5 friendly. Don't normally ride in thick claggy mud, but plenty of wet slop.

Thanks

I have a front mudhugger on my bike and very happy with it, stays on all year round. You also say you were happy with yours too so just get another. This being STW though no doubt someone will be on recommending the rrp and also someone else with another better offering

Crud XL.
Works excellently on both my 27.5+ (suss forks) and my 29+ (rigid forks)

The fact you can swap it over easily (because it uses rubber bands rather than zipties) is a bonus.

I've got an RRP long? and a crud XL I think it's called. It's got a flexible bit by the arch to allow the fork full compression.

I prefer the crud as I can remove/refit it quickly due to the o ring attachment, I can run it higher than the RRP as the brace sits below it plus it fits my normal forks and my weirdy reverse arch Manitous.

The RRP looks better but at the end of the day it's there to keep crap out of my face and hopefully not clog.

On 27.5 though

Edit: beaten to it.

I'll take a pic if I get time tomorrow.
The area around the arch is flexible rubber compared to the rest so can slide over the top of the Reverse arch, on full compression you'll get a buzz when the fork crown hits it or you can fold the flexible bit if the buzz bothers you. Doesn't seem to change the mud protection.

Crud doesn’t protect the seals tbough, which is a bit of a dealbreaker

Can't say I've noticed any difference in fork service between the RRP and the Crud. Obviously if you never ever have to deal with any clag or wierd fork then the RRP or similar looks better and may well protect the forks better.

Seals seal, they don't need protecting

Crud XL. Best front mudguard I've ever used.

Was going to say the crud XL too
put it on my none boost 29 pikes, with the 2.6 tyre there wasnt much space, and the crud was the only guard that fits around, not under the arch
it also gets squished up in the back of my car and returns to shape with no issues

Mudhugger for me.. just got a new fork on order, so ordered a bolt on Evo to match, but the FR is a solid mudguard & thoroughly recommended. My FR live on my forks all year round, and I add the extension piece for winter.
Alan, my MH is on a Revelation 29 with 2.6 tyres, no issues with clearance.

Combination of Crud & RRP. So good that I no longer need to ride with glasses in the slop.

RRP ProGuard is of better build quality than the Mudhugger ones, but both are good enough. If you need fork crown clearance though (e.g. RockShox Pike) then the Crud or Mudhugger Evo.

I'm still a fan of crown mounted guards. No clearance issues, and they work really well. They don't protect seals but they also don't risk building mud around seals (and modern seals don't need much protecting anyway)

I've got a couple of SKS ones in different shapes. The mounting hardware is a bit weak but I always cable tie them anyway.

No matter what you mudguard you fit to your fork, given the low weight and price, I’d still recommend zip-tying a crudcatcher on the down-tube.
Belt and braces👍

Crud XL is by far the most effective mud guard I have ever used. However, it can rattle quite a lot if things get really rough or you hit a hard landing.

Seals seal, they don’t need protecting

It's not the seals I like to protect, it's the surface of my forks. The seals in there are really just wipers, they don't actually seal, and if they're wiping grit up and down your forks, well that's not great is it?.

So any mudguard that sits above this area is a pretty poor design.

RRP Proguard is superb.

Not tried the Crud one.

RRP Proguard has much better clearance than the mudhugger, even after doing the boiling water tricks it would still rub with a 2.6 Magic Mary on a 29er boost lyrik.

RRP Proguard - bolt on if you have a compatible fork.

I have the Mini which is still quite big and it's really good, tempted to get the even longer one for the inevitable winter slopfest.

The Crud XL does the best job of keep the mud off me, but as others have mentioned doesn't protect the stanchions. I prefer a bolt on guard if I can, but if not I use the Crud XL.

Crud XL is by far the most effective mud guard I have ever used. However, it can rattle quite a lot if things get really rough or you hit a hard landing.

The rattling can be mostly fixed with a couple of bits of mastic tape.
