For a full-length outer.

Worth running FMJ or just something like Shimano SLR?

I use Goodridge cable outers and find they work really well.
I've not tried FMJ, but the Goodridge stuff is certainly way better than 'normal' outers. I just use normal LBS inners, which could be anything, Clarks, Shimano, Jagwire etc ...

How are goodridge better than std outers? Is the construction different? Ought to be, for the £!

druid - no cable stops? IME shimano slr works well enough (does compress but you can still lock up easily enough) for me to baulk at silly FMJ prices (and I bet there's a DIY alternative to be bodged but I've not looked into it)

Using a gear inner decreases friction.

No cable stops Al.

Epicyclo has a DIY bodge involving aluminium tubing.

Aye - I saw that too. Mucho cheapness, though that doesn't look like a whole lot of metal tube!

Alligator mini-I-link.
I have their gear cables on 4 of my bikes and they are excellent. not cheap, but are really a fit and forget item.

You get 3 long tubes and enough outer to do most bikes. 🙂

EDIT.

I think I'll get a spare set for myself at that price.

ssstu - what happens if you have an off and bend the tube?

I'd say the chances of doing that without bending your frame/fork are quite slim.

It's tough stuff to bend even when you're trying to bend it to go straight into the caliper without using the outer cable.

I have been using shimano XT cables on the beach and they seem to last, big chunky outers, i grease the inner cable and they seem to last a season without re lubing the inners, they have alloy end caps, cheap an er quite dull but they work 😀 both do not need cutting for a pugsley

Stu how much of an improvement are they? I'd have thought if you routed them well you'd struggle to damage them in a crash, if the frame allows it.

Still doubt I'd spend even £20, but I'm tighter than most Yorkshiremen.

They made a big difference on the rear of my mukluk.
Though that does have a very long cable run so that may have made it more noticeable. They also improved the front but not by as as much. Though the front was quite strong to start with.

I'd never noticed you were tigh before Al. 😆

I used a length of alloy tubing on my Cotic seat stay to stiffen up the rear cable disc. Works.
