Best all round gravel tyre

I don't get the Riddler hate personally. I have them on my Cross Check and they've been perfectly fine all-rounders. Not setting the world alight, but perfectly serviceable.

she nearly binned it on one loose off-camber corner, so more grip on descents would be good.

Actually I just saw this, not 100% sure the Terreno will be any grippier than a rambler to be honest...

Ok,  thanks.

The Tracer Pro then. Anyone run these as a gravel tyre? Or maybe just another rambler? Got to be a sweetspot of big loose rock grip and rolling speed somewhere...!

This isn't a recommendation but more a recommendation to avoid the maxxis receptor. They roll really well but they pick up punctures... Boy do they pick up punctures

I've had them on the bike for about a month now and I must have had nine punctures, four of which were so significant. I had to patch the tire from the inside as the sealant couldn't seal them.

When they wear out, or I get bored repairing punctures, I'll go with something else

I quite like the look of the Pirelli Cinturato Gravel RC for a bit more grip, although I'm not sure anything other than large volume will really grip on the loose marbly stuff

I've been impressed with the WTB Ventures we've got on the nursery run/errands/on/off road holiday adventure utility bike. Fast on road, and they've been great for gravelling around off road, too. They're obviously not Enduro tyres or CX mud tyres, but they're be great for someone who wants to ride the stuff the OP mentioned.

Yeah, was looking at those as well in a 45.  Better make a decision soon and get something ordered!

I got fed up with reading reviews and over thinking the whole thing and decided to be boring and went for another set of G one allrounds, but in larger 45mm variety and bronze sidewalls for a colour switch up.

If I was speccing a bike for racing I would probably have gone with the G one R's.

I think you've already bought them but 45s are a total game changer for comfort on disused railways, way less vibration lol. Tbh if you aren't doing mud, you don't need a super aggressive tread. To make sure I wasn't picking a tire that would just drag on the tarmac, I looked at the community reviews on Bike Tyres XYZ to see what people were saying about the Pathfinder Pros. They roll like a road tire in the center but have enough side knob for the corners.

I quite like the look of the new Continental Terra Competition tyres, but since when did a pair of tyres set you back more than £120! The less premium Terra Hardpacks I have on my Swift cost me £20 each (albeit on sale).

I'm running them (47s) on my new Spesh Creo and have done a few hundred miles on them. Mixture of loam, gravel, a bit of mud but nothing very deep. I've taken them all of the Blues at Swinley and a few of the Reds. In addition I've done a few road miles and ride a some of that with power assist turned off and they run very well.

I've just stuck on some 45mm Panaracer X1+

I was sold by testimonials that they were 'Gralloch proof' due to a new sidewall design. I had a couple of slashed tyres last year that were a messy faff to fix on the trail, anxious to avoid that again!

First impressions are very good, an even easier install than my previous Vittoria Terrenos, just snapped into place using an old school small bore track pump.

First ride out on them I don't think I quite found the sweetspot of pressure (going up a size meant I couldn't just use my previous pressures). I didn't feel I was benefiting from much additional comfort (maybe due to the re-enforced sidewalls) but I noticed I seemed to be rather effortlessly holding a faster average speed, not sure if the tread or the volume helping out.

Half tempted to get the snips out to remove some of the shoulder knobs to see if it gives them more of an edge for cornering 😎

I'm thinking myself to a stand still with this, I have discounted a few for various reasons and have found some others, I think I have norrowed it down two options at the moment, neither of which were suggested above and these are:

Pirelli Cintauro Adventure and WTB Riddler.

Anyone using these and care to comment?

Thanks.

I've not ridden either of them but have seen testing that rates the Hutchinson Caracal Race 45s as some of the fastest gravel tyres. G-Ones are great though, good pick. If you don't need wet/loose grip they're fast and smooth ime.

Well I started the thread and can confirm that I did indeed purchase tyres in 2024, and they're still going strong 😃

I rode the 45mm Caracal Race a lot last year and it's a great tyre with a surprising amount of grip and not overly fragile. I just wish they had 50 & 55mm options.

Maybe some people need new tyres, it’s been a couple of years.

I’m about to embark on an interesting experiment (to me), a 52mm (2.1”)  Vittoria peyote on the front (been running that a couple of months) and once I rebuild my rear wheel a Terrano Dry in 47mm on the back (if it clears the stays).

I’m very late to the conclusion that lots of others reached ages ago that some chonk is a positive in a gravely tyre.

A year ago I was happy on 38mm G-one all-rounds F & R. How times have changed…
