Will either be running 1 by 9 or 3 by 9, what is the best chain to get, all drivetrain components are shimano.

Cheers

Connex 908. Fantastic chains, and come with the best quick link ever made. Pretty cheap too, compared to some.

I've got an XT 9 speed cassette that works very well, but you're probably just best choosing what range you want and getting what's cheapest/lightest for your budget.

Can't go wrong with KMC, they're cheaper and better finished than Shimano, plus they don't throw in the towel at the first sign of moisture.

As for cassettes, you can't beat SLX for the money. You can even save a bit of weight from them by using an XT lockring if such things matter to you.

XTR every time. You don't lube them you polish them

they really are all the same, except shimano shift a little better and the plating on some takes a few seconds longer to rust.
