I’m sure it’s been done before but what’s they current thinking of the best 27.2 MTB dropper?

Imo the best option is to buy a newer frame 🙂 I presume it's pretty old. Sounds a bit drastic but there are so few options at 27.2 that you are compromising function or spending so much on the post that you could just put that towards a replacement frame.

I really like my PNW externally routed one on my Soul. Nice feel than the One Up on my modern normal seatpost sized bike.

27.2 options are limited but are still there and cost much the same as 30.9 and above choices, so I wouldn’t save anything to put towards a new frame and dropper (and wheels, etc).

I’m perfectly happy with the frame, it would just be a better with a dropper. Changing because of the Seatpost is a bit too much of a reverse thought process for me.

Thanks for the suggestion though! 😁

Didn’t ST do an article on 27.2 dropper options last year?

Not when I looked into it. The pnw post mentioned is around £200. You can get a decent 30.9 post for half that and there's plenty 2nd hand for much less. You can buy a reasonable 30.9 frame and post for less than the price of a 27.2 post. I know it's ridiculous, just offering it as something to consider. It also lets you have a decent drop. I think 27.2 maxes at around 125mm drop

I’ve a Brand X 27.2mm, disappointing amount of play with not all that much use. Goes up and down fine admittedly.

I've had a 27.2mm Thomson for a couple of years, absolutely faultless.
External cable makes it a doddle to swap between bikes (Solaris and Stinky mainly, both shimmed) which I do as it is horribly expensive to buy another.
£240 for a secondhand seatpost. Eek! But well worth it.

I’ve just bought a BrandX for my Stooge. I was worried it wouldn’t be enough drop only being 105mm drop, but I’d struggle to get anything longer in the frame. The collar is only about 10mm above the seat clamp. There’s slight lateral play, I mean a tiny amount. Buts it’s far less than others at 3 or 4 times the price.

They are £111.99 on Wiggle and CRC at the moment. Bargain TBH.

I have a BrandX on my commuter/hack bike. It works fine but limited to 4" drop. If it's for your main bike, probably worth thinking about buying a frame that'll take a 30.9 mm post so you can get more drop. Even 125mm drop is a bit limiting.

2nd vote for xplr reverb..... If you can find one. But it'll depend of if your definition of 'best' includes value for money....

These are good

Remotes are much better though.
