They have a livestrong sticker on the bike. I'm out.

Maybe he's not a racer, and not bothered about pretending to be and just wants a nice bike for spinning through the countryside on a Sunday?

He's also using 'mtb' pedals......

A 42t big ring on a road bike is daft, limits the bike significantly. A triple or a wider cassette would've been a far better option IMO.

42/11 at 100rpm would be arround 30mph, which isn't bad, maybe he's a little overweight and/or has bad knees?

I've a tripple on my tourer which IIRC is a 44 big ring, ok its probably significanlty heavier, but I dont miss the big gears.
