The killer for UK style MTBs is clearance for the front ring.

A bike with mud clearance has its chainstays splay out almost immediately and the smallest front they sell in Europe is 46t. There have been problems with the 39t so it is not available here. A 39t is available in the USA though and it is what we need to get things to line up - or if you are building a custom you can lengthen the chainstays to make a 46 fit.

Cheers epicyclo. I'm actually trying to get relatively short (for a 29er) chainstays on this frame, so a 39t sounds preferable. Do you know what sort of problems they've had?

It's really annoying that there's such a limited range of sprocket sizes and belt lengths - it really limits what ratios you can achieve on what frames. Hopefully Gates will broaden their range in the future.
