I didn't get an entry for the PDS, but our holiday coincides with the PDS. Do they shut the trails the PDS covers to not PDSers? Or could we ride some of the route despite not being entered? Also, I'm guessing Morzine is going to be about as busy as it gets in summer?

From memory, you'll barely even notice it's on. Unfortunately the busiest week is Harley Week - definitely to avoided ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I was there during the PDS. Didn't notice anything but a train of 'enduro' looking types riding through town covered from head to toe in mud.

I was also there during Harley week. Good fun it's only on every two years!

Harley week you say? Someone I ride with occasionally got beaten up by some bikers in a bar in Morzine last year. Hadn't heard of Harley week until now.

So essentially we could ride the entire route if we felt so inclined, provided we took our own supplies?

Harley week isn't on in 2014.
Yes it's busy but great crack and beer!

that's not something to be proud of, Harley riders are to motor biking what STWers are to mountain biking

Perhaps on that basis a biker on the equivalent harley forum is recounting the tale of some guy he knew getting a stern grimace from some STWers in a pub in Hebden.

You can ride all the course, no problems. Lift queues are longer though.

Longer lift queues than normal is the only problem from memory.

And even then not all lifts bizarrely. We had two big queues (Chatel TS and Champoussin) but the rest were ride up to the lift, get on. Considering Champoussin feeds the Crosets lifts, the latter was empty after a 15 min line for the former.

@winch, the PdS goes on for three days (Fri/Sat/Sun) so even if you are doing it you are usually there on the days you are not. From memory the key lifts are reserved for PdS entrants from 8-9 which is peak time in the morning (but frankly no one checks), the rest of the day there is a steady flow of people but it's never that crowded. The PdS doesn't use any of the more interesting trails anyway. Even if you are not doing the event you can look around the show, this year in Les Gets.

jambalaya - The only problem is getting the lift passes. Last year they opened the Lindarets office at 9:30am so we sat there for 2 hours so our one mate without the entry could get his lift pass. Easily avoided by buying passes a day early if you can as the 2nd day we just rolled up with our normal lift passes and got on before we were "supposed" to.

JAmbalaya...

Help us out then mate with some 'more interesting' trails. Either on a thread or email in profile.

Any 'epic' sort of high alt, lots of mountain views, with descents that are xc fun would be ideal please fella.

Cheers.

YGM

Les Gets - Samoens (my favourite, go on a clear day and it has everything you've asked for (xc+ !), will link a photo from another stw-er)
Les Gets - Col Encrenaz - Morzine (which shares some stuff with this route linky)
Linderets - Lac Montriond, more dh than xc

Good to hear we shouldn't really encounter any problems then. Getting excited already, it's my first time in biking in the alps ๐Ÿ˜€
