Was cornered at work, "need a new bike £600ish, what do I get?" So guys do my homework for me please 😉

Must have many gears, around 120-140mm travel. Wheel size not important (is it yet?)

Any bargains to be had?

Ta

Decathlon would be a good bet if there's one local to you. Good spec for the money on most of their Rockrider stuff and the option to sit on the bike first, rather than buying blind on the web.

Those "dirty dozen" type reviews in the magazines are perfect for you. I'm not sure most folks on this forum are actually riding £600 bikes, but MBR and What MTB do this kind of review quite regularly.

I think the biggest question (IMO) is how aggressive will the rider be. Not much point in buying an XC machine if the rider is planning to jump and huck off everything. And a heavier, burly bike is unlikely to be the best choice for someone who just wants to ride on pedestrian trails.

The last mag review I saw rated the Kona Shred quite highly BTW.

I'm possibly going to be selling my camber expert, 120mm full suss, they're going for around 600 on eBay.

Depending on the size of your college this could be a shout.
