I frequently see posts questioning bearings choice (the latest being the CK thread) and each time, I wonder if I'm just a lucky B*stard.
By way of example, I have had my 2005 Stumpy FSR Expert from new. It has travelled with me countless times to Afan, CYB, all of the 7 Stanes bar Interleithen and Glentrool, various natural trails around the UK, plus trips to Andalucia, Oregon and Moab. It also does an approx average of 50 miles / week, rain or shine in the mud and clay of the North Downs. In thousands of miles of riding, I have consumed several complete drive trains, umpteen brake pads, several grips and tyres and needed shock and fork each serviced (i.e. repaired) once.
In all that time though, all bearings (headset, hubs, pivots all original), have continued to behave as new, with zero maintenance (I tend to view everything as disposable rather than servicable). Cheap Shimano m520 pedals have nomadically travelled between bikes but their bearings have never needed attention!
I also have an older hardtail an even older cheaper hardtail converted for commuting and a road bike (hiss!). All with similar experiences.
So, am I lucky or are modern sealed bearings really indestructible unless abused? What's your experience?
BTW. I always lube all but the commuter pre-ride and wash them post ride, with a low pressure hose (no brush) and use GT85 as a water repellent post wash on drive train, frame bearings and pedal cage springs. They have NEVER seen a pressure wash.
They have NEVER seen a pressure wash.
Bingo!
I hardly ever wash my bike and ride it in all conditions and bearings last for years. Only been riding full suspension for a year mind, and my first one got nicked 6 months ago so I have no personal experience with pivot bearings/bushings.
