[#4064200]

New bike is on it's way and is BB30 with a FSA Afterburner double chainset.

My previous experience of FSA involved replacing a road BB within 6 weeks and the cranks weren't great (compact Gossamer).

I have an itch for some XTR 40/28 but don't want to get bogged down with bottom bracket fettling every 5 mins.

It looks like Wheels Manufacturing and KCNC do adapters for HT2 cranks but what are they like?

Erm...won't the BB30 bearings, by definition, be completely different to your last ones?

If you mean in relation to where they sit in the frame, then yes though who knows about the bearing quality.

However I want to know more about adapting BB30 as I've not used any of these new BB standards.

I set up a XT chainset on a BB30 using Wheels Manufacturing adaptors and used for 12 laps at Bikefest, no issues,

however the chainline is quite different, 5mm out, from the SRAM BB30 chainset i had fitted previously,

I got through a BB30 bottom bracket in 6 weeks, when this one goes I will get the SRAM PF30 to BSA adaptor and run the BB which came with the chainset,

Could you not spacer out the c/set as you normaly would with a conventional BB? Their website suggests (their) spacer kits as required.

Isn't BB92 the solution to this? I thuoght that was a press fit MTB BB that took the normal HT2 axle....

No, I mean they are way bigger.

And FSA, AFAIK, buy bearings in. So one bad FAS BB experience does not mean all FSA BBs are guff.

The WM BB30 adapters are designed to be used on road bikes but they now make a thin shims to space them out for MTB use

Have a look at the Wheels Manufacturing BB adaptor chart HERE

Scott, MrP

I've been on the WM site and didn't see any explicit mention of their units being geared for road use (68mm?).

I'll wait until the new wagon arrives and see what the BB shell comes in at.

not sure what you mean, the XT chainset is 5 mm out than the SRAM chainset, an additional spacer would bring it more out than it is already,

actually the different alignment is probably just the difference between SRAM and Shim, the SRAM was a custom for Specialized, so may have a smaller Q-factor,

I was a bit wary of going for the using the spacer, but apparently Cavendish uses them, which makes me think the advantaged of the BB30 must be near negative for an ordinary rider, BB30 = lean manufacturing gone mad, imo, PF30 even madder,

Ahh got you. I read 'out' as being different as opposed to 5mm further out.
