Have noticed now after a few weeks that my cranks move/have some side to side play in them, i cannot hear any crunching when i spin them without putting pressure on the pedals, but when i put preasure on pedales there is some grinding noise.

I have tightened the crank bolt (black bolt) and even tried as a test to overtighten it to remove play, but still has play within it.

I now think my BB needs replacing as the bearings are wearing out.
BB in question is Deore one and is over 6 months old.

Do i replace with like for like?
Or spend £10 more and get the SLX/XT one, as it is compactible with deore crankset?(is it worth the extra?, or just lighter?)

cheers

SLX is more reliable/durable than Deore- better sealing. Probably won't make a huge difference in summer but in winter I got about half the life from deore. Price vs lifespan it's not too bad but it saves the hassle of replacing as often.

But shop around, especially Rose Bikes and the other germans, I got my last XT for less than the price of a UK deore.

rose bikes work ou much better value and better to get to or pool with mates as postage is relatively high

I would first strip it down and check out for something wrong - eg the
bb total width too narrow due incorrect spacers, BB shell a bit narrow, O-ring missing from inner surface of crank - etc etc

Then re-assemble (follow the Park guide if unsure) and see how it is.

i did see the rose bikes website but their postage is quite steep at £8, so unless i can find some mates who want to order some gear too it isnt worth while ordering a XTR BB for £24 compared to a £13 quid deore one...

unless im totally wrong here and the XTR BB for £24 is soo much better and is worth spending the extra on??

XTR BB for £24 is slightly better value than Deore for £13 IMO- you're basically paying a couple of quid in order to have to change BBs less often. Though, tbh I can't tell any difference between XT and XTR in use- they do have different design but it doesn't seem to matter.

andyl provides good advice.
