i have to replace my fsa bb4000 which is an external bb very similar to hollowtech. They are well known to be made of soft cheese but replacing it is cheaper than buying a second hand shimano crankset (preferred option). I have just discovered that my shimano bb tool does not fit the fsa bracket even though it says it does fit fsa external bb’s. In true fsa style this model of bb is different to all the rest of their line up along with being the only existing bb that uses 19mm spindles! I dont want to buy the tool as this will be the last time i use this hateful bb system. If carefully done do you think it might be possible to remove it with a vice and install a new one the same way? Is it too cheeky to go to the shop and ask the mechanic to borrow one for 5 mins (i would grovel with biscuits)? Any other cheap option i could do?

edit: my only local lbs charge £28 for fitting so how much to borrow the tool and do it on site as my frame is stripped already.

I had a quick go with some pliers and i reckon i can. So once i have a bit of time tomorrow i will try and do it with less brute force and ignorance that i used today which was just an exploratory attempt.

18" Stilsons! My tool of choice for junk BBs I have no intention of replacing - lives in the bottom drawer of my toolchest along with the plethora of obsolete BB tools
