Second post today seeking advice.
Basically me and the (young) family are attending a close friends wedding party in August near Nurenberg. So rather than go for the weekend I thought we'd tag on a few days and head south to the Bavarian Alps or into Austria.
I'd look to take the bike and split my time between family and riding for the remainder of the bank holiday weekend and week.
So with that in mind can anyone recommend somewhere to start looking where I can ride decent flowy, alpine singletrack and there's enough to see and do with the family?*
*Although relaxing by a chalet pool and the odd day trip will probably be more than enough
Mayerhofen/Zillertal?
Thanks Dave. Have you ridden there?
I remember this vid and liked the look of it...
...although they look to be better riders than I 🙂
Certainly one to consider from a riding perspective. It suggest the Penken mountain has decent way marked trails. Which helps.
Hi
I live in Austria about 30 minutes from Innsbruck, spoilt for natural riding around here. Lots of walking trails around here, not really meant to ride them but generally as long as you slow down for walkers and are aware that there may be people on the trail then people are happy to see you.
Depending on the riding you are after there are a few things around. Innsbruck has the Nordkette, Serfaus has a very good and modern bikepark and in Solden is gondola access trail riding. Also in my local ski resort are 3 or 4 natural walking trails which are very good.
Things to do for the family you are spoiled, really are in an adventure playground. Rafting, canyoning, climbing, archery are all close by and if you are just after a relaxing day there is the Aquadome in the Otztal or you can spend the day in Innsbruck or nip over to Italy for an ice cream( Italy is one hour away over the Timmelsjoch pass)
Nice place to stay is in Oetz, at the head of the Oetz valley, traditional Austrian town, not to big.
Anything else you want to know just ask!
+1 for Solden, awesome techy trails through the trees (mainly) but lifts aren't cheap (28euro/day last summer if i recall correctly). And you can ride from the top of the Timmelsjoch to Solden which is quite a ride, apparently. Zillertal had a couple of excellent bike-only trails but didn't inspire otherwise, mind you the weather at the time didn't help. Heaps for the family to do in the valley...
Bavarian lakes may be better for the kids. Great places to swim. Also the Salzkammergut for the same reason. Not sure what the riding is like though.
My family and I have has some great outdoorsy holidays around Mittenwald near Karwendel in Bavaria. Direct train from Munich, great open air swimming, good mountain biking and easy bike hire near the station. Accommodation wasn't to expensive either.
I'm in Munich, 40 mins from the alps. You could easily spend a week or so down here.
Plenty of lakes and easy walks for the family. Enough trails to keep daddy occupied, too.

Saalbach-Hinterglemm
Zell-am-Zee is only a few miles away.
Thanks for all the feedback folks, appreciated. Lots to consider.
My daughter is only 18 months so we won't be able to make the most of a lot of activities available. So nice walks and swimming are ideal.....or climbing and base jumping based on her current danger seeking interests.
I suppose I'm not looking for anything overly technical. More simple, flowy, alpine singletrack. Preferably gondola assisted natural trail riding although I'm happy with spinning my legs too.
I was impressed with the amount of detail available on Tirol website (www.tyrol.com) for biking.
Some areas & hotels will give you a tourist card (Saalbach is the Joker card) which will give you 1 free ride up so it's worth asking whoever you book accommodation with.
A nice family base could be Maria Alm, outdoor pool etc, only 15mins from Leogang and 30 from Saalbach.
They are more DH lite based areas but there are gems like the Hackelberg trail.
Joker card is unlimited other than in Leogang, where you get one uplift.
Leermoos has a lift, small park and some very good natural stuff. About 90mins from Munich.
Tegernsee/Bad Tölz is closer, lots of trails and lots of easy paths for a 2yr old, but no uplifts with the bike.
