Cant afford 90quid etc for bike specific ones. Any good basic recommendations?
Skate shoes?
Barely worn 2nd hand 5tens from someone who tried flats but didn't get on with them 🙂
Just bought a pair of sombrio shoes from crc, half price (45 quid)
The seem well made and the soles are grippy.
Have a look: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Brands.aspx?BrandID=950
There ws a thread on here recently heaping praise on some that crc were selling reduced. Think they were Sombio? 40 quid I think.
Got a pair of these myself linky.
Probably deeply unfashionable but a) comfy b) very supportive and c) reasonably stiff sole.
Look at the Airwalks as well but I've found the sole not as sturdy...
Cheers

Nike Mogan 6.0
Recently picked up some 5:10s and was surprised at how hard the sole was in comparison.
Last time I was in the UK I picked up four pairs for under a ton at an outlet store. Gave one pair to a mate as his 5:10s were shagged and he is now überzeugt.
I have posted in your Sombrios thread, but, Sombrios.
Gone for the Sombrio Slats in 10.5 in 'that' purple 8) cheers
I couldn't bring myself to wear shoes that are already ugly, in purple.
Tbh Ive also got AM45's ...people at work called them special.
At least these look LMFAO-tastic
Whatevers cheap at Sport Direct.
Got a pair of Airwalks just for the bike for £20 the other week. I'll get as long out of them as I would 5:10s at 4 times the price.
Just get some waffle sole vans and be done with it!
The Airwalks. Looked at them, the soles dont look pin/grip friendly at all
what are you using them for......
so natural lakes and peaks riding with hike abike pedalling
get some low or approach walking shoe.....stiff sole so better at pedalling
playing and dry trail centre skate shoe
get down tk maxx
Vondally. The former 'low and approach'?
Ive also got AM45's and boy its like walking on ice sometimes so ...interested
Edit- got it/good point
Hora.....approach shoe is like a stiff soled trainer for walking into crags for climbing or scrambling usually has a stiff sole, sticky rubber and reinforced toed box like below
or a low trainer like walking shoe
both have soles that will deal with terror pins better and vibram soles are really grippy
TK MAxx have allsorts in
zamberlan recently Goretex approach shoe £30
or try hitec/regatta/brasher/karrimor ...... have a look and try on
the soles are better for walking as well
Hi Tech Figaro's look spot on
The Sombrio's came. My God they are hideous. Like something someone who needs an inbuilt sole in one shoe needs. Far worse even than Shimano's AM range. Terrible (off they go back).
Airwalks from sports direct, there was a link last week, think they were around the £20 mark. Job done.
+ 1 for the waffle sole Vans, I get mine cheap in T-K MAX
Vondally, I have a pair of the Haglofs approach shoes. They are great for their intended use. However, I think 5:10s are much much better for the bike. The design of the 5:10 sole suits flats better. I would use a pair of cheap skate shoes ahead of them.
I've always had a good time with Adidas Stan smiths. THey look cool as well and clean up pretty well. You can often find them in sales as well
Waffle sole skate shoes for about £20 various designs.

Ive used Five Tens for years, on my second pair. Kevin has been the same. As the girls have been growing we bought them skate shoes from TK Max.
We did a Fathersday ride which took in what we know as potato alley in the Peak. Abigale asked as we are now the same shoe size if she could try my Five Tens and I use her DC skate shoes. By the time we got to the bottom I wanted them back but didnt get them back till the end of the ride.
Before
During
After
Abigale couldnt believe how good they were and as such have ordered her a pair.
To me they are worth every penny
Ha ha ha, I dont think that can be argued with!!!
Sombrio X-Floats.
Hora orders ugly shoes, looks at pictures of ugly shoes, is told by posters, that they're ugly, and yet is surprised and appalled when they turn up and they're ugly. This is what powers the internet
@ Hora - what about these then Teva
The food's a lot better at that pub than Abigale's face would suggest 🙂
I bought those Sombrio ones for £45 from CRC. Yes they are as mingin as everyone has been saying, but they look tough, they're leather and have a flap covering laces so should be pretty weather proof. They'll end up covered in mud eventually anyway so who cares what they look like.
Well the sophisticated technical footwear of choice for Jedi, who's not too shabby when it comes to riding, is whatever pumps are cheap at TKMaxx.
Ibn, Nike at the Mo
Just bought some airwalk 'mid' type boots which grip pretty well. They were £16.99 and excitingly named 'brian' (by airwalk not by me!)
Much better grip than the 'metalhead' trainer type I had before.
