Oct half term 12 of us stayed at the Maxwell Arms Hotel in Dalbeattie. Newly refitted very friendly, they bent over backwards to accomodate every whim, and the best breakfast ever.

If your doing Drumlanrig you don't need to go as far as Dumfries which is a 25min drive and Dalbeattie is probably around a 40min drive.
The nearest town/village is Thornhill which is just a hope and a skip away, goggle B&B's in Thornhill
