Is it best to go with a drybag (e.g alpkit)

[img] [/img]

and strap it to your bars

Or get something like this

[img] [/img]

which is specifically designed to attach to the bars but isn't 100% waterproof?

What does everyone else do with regard to bag attached to the frame?

you could always use an exped dry bag inside the second kind of bag.

to state the obvious; if you need to keep something dry (eg down bag) you need a dry bag - if you aren't bothered then cordura will do.

I use a 13L one of these on the bars with a couple of straps off ebay.

Or just line your bag with a foldable dry bag as above:

£5

Just get an alpkit airlok xtra, not the gourdon rucksac (unless you want it to be more multipurpose). They've loops you can run straps through.

With whatever way you choose to do it, just make sure you it is strapped to stop it bouncing too much (annoying) - an extra, wee, strap to the fork crown did for me - and is up away from teh front tyre (just a quick buzz on the tyre will have a hole in it).

Did me fine for a month in Spain last year: [img] [/img]

Going on-road this year so panniers (and probably far more stuff than I actually need) this time.

The Alpkit bags are good but I prefer these
http://www.ewetsuits.com/acatalog/dry-bags-info_355.html
which are a bit more heavy duty and longer/thinner than Alpkit.

I use the 12 litre (linked to above) just with some straps or the 20 litre in conjunction with a Wildcat bar-harness for bigger loads
http://wildcatgear.co.uk/products/handlebar-harness/

Saddle pack I use a large Ortleib waterpoof pack
http://www.ortlieb.co.uk/index.php/bike/saddle-bags/saddle-bag.html

rest of stuff just goes in normal Camelbak - I do travel light though 🙂

Cheers people.

Think i might go for a seatbag from here

http://www.bikepack.pl/en/shop/

and get the 13L alpkit drybag and just strap it to the bars. Would love a frame bag as well.

For the Singlespeeders out there. Do you put a bigger cog on or just MTFU?

Running standard 32:16 but wondering with all the weight

I tend to find my bivvy bag is actually quite waterproof...

My silk liner goes inside my sleeping bag which goes inside my bivvy bag and then I strap the lot to my bar. Sleeping mat goes in my Camelbak where the bladder usually lives, and water goes in a bottle on the bike.

So far my bivvy list

* Alpkit Hunka
* Alpkit dry bag (strapped to bars)
* Seatbag from> http://www.bikepack.pl/en/shop/
* Tarp
* MSR pocketrocket
* tarp - not sure on this one yet?!

And then some cutlery, mug and pot

I can see me getting well into this and I haven't even been bivvying yet. The kit out there and options are endless!

ah.. forgot.. what do people recommend for sleeping on?

Some of these mats are expensive

I've got a Karrimor 3/4 mat from Sports Direct in Nottingham. It's cheap and OK - better than the Alpkit one which delaminated.

Plastic cutlery can often be had for free from a nasty cafe after you've eaten your fry-up. Lighter than fancy Ti and you can throw it in a bin after breakfast to save more weight and washing-up 😉

Pacific Outdoors airbed-style mats seem popular, I've just bought the Ether Compact mat but not had a chance to use it yet. The Sleeping Bag Shop did have some rather good discounts on them as well.

New Alpkit mats are aparently betterer.

Light my Fire spork from most decent camping shops, or I notice Tesco do an imitation one, or if you have an urge to spend there are some nice Ti options.

Good find on teh seatpacks, might have to get myself one of them!

The new alpkit pads are very good. I have been using one for the past few months. Thermarest have a new neoair out as well

The airo is the model I have. Much better than a thermarest prolite.

if you have the art of bivvy sorted you can do a 3-4 day trip with everything in a 30 litre back pack with room to spare. no need to strap loads of heavy stuff to a bike 😀

proper racing 🙂

I heard singlespeeding events are all about wearing silly clobber, fishing ya bikes out of a tree and drinking loads of beer each lap

(and all the while looking as niche as possible )

Although the last one applies to those crazy niche boys

What's this 4th place all about? (noticed the tollah and the niche lot mentioned on FB) Is it customary in singlespeed events or is it a dig at dan the 5th?

Tazzy.. dno't forget rollapaluza in the evening 🙂

ahhhh Mr Disco...I have been secretly training for the rollapaluza to smash you into oblivion and spin to win*

*may not actually be a true statement and the likelihood is that I will be so drunk I don't know who I am, what I am, or where I am by about mid-day and will be smoking more than icelandic volcano
