I know that a few on here have Bafang motors so I was after some experiences of reliability and longevity. Also which batteries have people paired motors with? I'd be looking at their 250w motor for my roadrat which does commuting duties but I'd also like to do "gravel"y type riding on it (I doubt I average 15kph let alone 25 at present). I presume that you can fit them without the throttle and motor brakes? Thanks!
I've got a 52v 250watt limited (software limited and played at 250)bbs02. Had it for 3 years.
I have it on a cargo bike...I've yet to find the limit on the weight I can carry - but I have got the gearing low down. You can't let them bog down in a high gear or they tank batteries and get hot quick.
No need for throttle no need for brakes
They just kick in and out on a pedal sensor.

Are there instructions on setting one up without a throttle and brake sensor anywhere? Pedal assist would be ideal

They don't hve a torque sensor just rotation and cadence - so are not as nice to ride as a motor with a torque sensor. However they are cheap and reliable from what I know.
Trailrat - do you not find crunchy gear changes without the cut out on the gear cable?
No I just pull the brake lever slightly to brake the contact.
Motor cuts out - change and carry on.
As for instructions. You just fit it and pedal. The other sensors self populate the system when you plug them in and remove them selves when you don't have them plugged in
I'd recommend the brake sensors as a minimum.
Not sure the bafang measures cadence. It doesn't care what speed your spinning at -it'll even activate when your blatantly soft pedaling. It just goes immediately to which ever of the 10 programmable settings you have selected....IE 10 is 15.5mph max and each setting down is slightly slower. (As stock)

just don't plug them in. I don't use either or even the gear sensor, you don't need any of them.

I did a fair of googling awhile ago when I was thinking of going the Balfang/mid drive route and it looked like the Tongsheng unit looked better due to its torque sensor.

As per the Bafang - all spares are available.

You can get ones that will just fit on the levers and cut the circuit, so will work with any brakes I think.
You don't need it though. i tried the brake sensing on one before, just seemed more of a pain in the arse than actually useful to any degree.
if you backpedal a touch the motor also cuts out. So that control is there without any sensors.
